    Improving Initial Experience

Upon reading the latest review from EngadgetHD, I started thinking about my initial experience and I think there is some merit to their complaint about having to wait a few days to get the latest database & software version (EHD had to wait 1 day, but they didn't get the latest DB version, I think). I think a good number of people would like to start using Vudu right away and may be disappointed when latest movies or functionality (i.e. HD titles) aren't immediately available (people want immediate gratification).

To make things better first time around, would it be technologically possible to automatically download the latest software & database (banners, descriptions, etc.) but WITHOUT video headers (they would later be downloaded in the background as usual)?

Such an update would not take too long (limited only by user's network) and that would mean that a user would have access to all the latest stuff right away. Then, if a user wants to playback a title without video header, he/she will only have to wait a minute or two for that particular file to be downloaded.

If it's technologically possible, I believe this would be the best combination of Vudu and ATV/360 approaches.

    What does everyone think?

I thought the initial experience was excellent, super simple and super easy to setup. Certainly easier than any other audio visual component I have had to setup before.

I guess there could be a feature to force a connect to retrieve the latest db in some sort of dynamic update - I know we have that with tivo.

The update for Tivo is just a channel lineup. The database for the VUDU is much more complex. Not only do you have the movie catalog along with meta data, you have previews, heads, license info etc. If you leave the VUDU connected to the internet you always have the lastest update.

This is precisely why my idea for initial setup (which I recently discovered was actually brought up way back) is for Vudu to download everything EXCEPT previews and headers in a max bandwidth mode (I can't imagine that metadata and banners take up a lot of space). This will mean that for movies without heads, we have an AppleTV-like experience where we have to wait a minute or two, but certainly looks more impressive than having to wait day(s).

          The quoted time by VUDU is 36 hours.....or 1.5 Days.....or 2160 minutes....or 129600 seconds.....

Some people (especially bloggers from gadget sites that shall go unmentioned) don't want to wait that long and I kind of see their point. With my proposal, we have an answer that will improve initial impression of Vudu and nullify AppleTV's immediate-access [perceived] advantage.

I believe, first impressions mean a lot (especially to instant-gratification people who buy Vudu) and having entire library visible immediately would be huge. When people boot up Vudu for the first time, they are likely to browse it to see what's available and not having latest titles visible is a downer. Odds are people aren't going to rent one of the movies that has no header downloaded, so they might never notice it. Worst case, they try to watch a movie and have to wait a minute or two, but this is par for the course for AppleTV and I think people are fine with that.
