TALES FROM THE CRYPT: DEMON KNIGHT HDX Incorrect on Vudu

Purchased the HDX version of TALES FROM THE CRYPT: DEMON KNIGHT for my Vudu account and wanted to alert everyone to the fact that the stream is not displaying correctly.

The film is supposed to be in the 1.85:1 (or the normal 1.78:1 on HDTVs) aspect ratio. DEMON KNIGHT shows up as a vertically squished square in the middle of your display. Obviously, this isn't right.

It looks like the flag to pop out the film horizontally for proper display wasn't set during the encode, so everyone is tall, thin and the image shows up as a square.

Just letting everyone know to steer clear of this one. I LOVE this movie, too, and it's a shame it's presented this way. I don't understand how the folks at Vudu don't notice these types of things before putting them up for sale/rent.

I submitted a case with support, but if the right folks see this here, please remove the title from my account and issue a refund. Thanks.

Yikes... I converted this one months ago and never got around to checking it. You're totally correct. This one needs to be re-encoded.

I just submitted a work order as well to get this fixed.

Re: TALES FROM THE CRYPT: DEMON KNIGHT HDX Incorrect on Vudu

Annnnd... just as I figured, the Vudu support I have received regarding this incorrectly displaying title is completely clueless.

My first email from them said this:
"Unfortunately not all of our titles are available in wide screen. This is more common with older titles such as this. Unfortunately this transaction was done through Walmart and I do not have any way of issuing a refund."

Forgetting the fact that it was ADVERTISED as HDX in 1080P, in which you can only assume would be a properly presented film in it's correct 16:9 ratio, the film isn't even a proper 4:3 full-frame version, as it's encoded for 16:9 and everyone is unrealistically tall and thin... which means the title isn't popping out correctly/properly horizontally to fit your screen. This is an encoding issue that needs to be fixed. Period. It is NOT a full-frame version of the film.

So, I sent them this email in response:
"The file isn't even in full-frame. it's encoded wrong, so that it's SUPPOSED to be widescreen, but doesn't display properly. Can you just remove it from my account? I'm not going to bother traveling 20 minutes to and from the Wal-mart for the couple of dollars refund."

I get YET ANOTHER email today, that shows me Vudu customer service has no idea what they are saying:

"Thank you for contacting VUDU customer care. The movie studio of this movie provided us the encoding the movie is to be in for each quality for HD and HDX it is in the full screen. For the Enhanced widescreen that I think is what you are looking for is in the SD quality. If you select the movie for play the options across the bottom will allow you to change it to the SD and that will give you the Widescreen. As for a refund or even removal the only ones that are able to do either of these is walmart since that is who added it to your account."

So, again, they are referring to the film as "full screen", when it is not. I didn't upgrade the film to HDX to only enjoy the standard def version in proper widescreen. This is ridiculous.

So, I send them back this just now:
"It's obvious the HDX version is the 16:9 transfer that isn't properly expanding to fit the 16:9 screen. Everyone and everything in the HDX version is too tall and thin and NOT a proper 4:3 full screen presentation. It is a high def version that isn't playing properly and not expanding horizontally like it should."

Look VUDU, if you can't give me a refund on a title that was misrepresented as HDX, then fine. It's a few dollars. I'm more concerned in the fact that the customer service reps that responded to me haven't a clue as to what they are even saying... trying to tell me (I have worked in home video mastering for over 20 years now) that the HDX version is a full-frame presentation is NOT true. It's an improperly encoded 1080p widescreen master that should be displaying at 1.85:1 (1.78:1), BUT ISN'T, and the image is being squished vertically into a 4:3 frame.

Just remove TALES FROM THE CRYPT: DEMON KNIGHT from my account, if that's all you can do.

I reported the HDX stream for re-encoding. Depending on whether the source needs to be requested from the studio it may take a bit, though.

I did notice the 720p HD one encode is fine. Must have been some mix up on the HDX encode.

It's been two years and the problem hasn't been fixed. That's kinda crazy. Would you be willing to look into this again?

Wish I would've seen this thread before I too, purchased the squished HDX picture. Can't believe this hasn't been fixed as this thread is pretty old.

I just got this title today and paid for the HDX UPGRADE on D2D and it is still not fixed after over 2 years. Obviously I did not see this thread until it was too late. This is outrageous! I will be posting warnings in all the major UV Facebook groups about this horrible quality and complete lack of care by Vudu!

This is completely unacceptable and unprofessional! Not to mention a total scam by Vudu!

3 years and still no fix?! This is crazy! How can the studio have do the encodes, send them over, have one me screwed up and not even care about fixing it? I don't know who is at fault here. I would try contacting the studio directly, since Vudu sure doesn't seem to be getting anything done.

It's insane... Just have a look at this thread....

                            https://forum.vudu.com/showthread.ph...ghlight=aspect

The list only gets bigger with the very rare fix here and there. It seems that providing the fundamental basics of this service is not top priority, or at least it seems that way from the vantage point of the consumer.

I just read this title was removed from D2D today. I guess one wait to prevent people from getting it on the "cheap" side only to complain about it afterwards.
