Spoilers! Man of Steel vs Superman: Returns - which was better? Spoilers!

Which movie did you think was the better Superman movie?

I enjoyed the grittiness and action of MOS. The story change up was great and made Superman seem more alien and vulnerable. Overall some good stuff. The actor looked rugged and brought a more macho superman which I think was needed. Lois was tough as she should be, but the whole film was missing some comic aspects. Too serious all the time.

Downside, I didn't get the feel good, save the day feelings as I did with SR. The action was too much and I found myself bored wishing the fight would just be done. I was quite shocked to see Superman snap Zod's neck. It just felt wrong for the character to Kill him off. At least like that. Understandable, Christopher Reeve killed off Zod in Superman II, though it felt indirect. You never actually saw the death of Zod. Lastly the score did nothing for me.

SR was good and fun, however there seemed to be a lot of unnecessary scenes and a lack of action. Lois and Superman actors just looked to young in my opinion. The acting was top notch and the film was more of a sequel than a reboot which was great. The original music fanfare was there which really upped the excitement and emotion in the movie. Seeing Lex swindle the dying rich woman of her estate seemed pointless. We know he is the bad guy, we didn't need 15 minutes to explain this aspect.

Overall, I like both, but Superman: Returns will be my favorite out of the two. At least until Man Of Steel makes a sequel and that may change. I just didn't care about the characters in Man Of Steel and it didn't make me smile and laugh like Superman Returns.

I really wish writers and directors from both films would get together an make a definitive Superman movie. Both with action, grittiness, fun and laughter and maybe a few tears.

It seems like the producers of "Man of Steel" were trying to overcompensate for one of the most widely critiqued elements of "Returns": that Superman never threw a punch at an opponent. I'm a lifelong Superman fan who enjoys just about every media adaption of Superman (film, TV, serial, etc.), and I enjoy watching both of these films often.

Neither are perfect films. I think you're right in saying that "Returns" shows more of the day-to-day heroics we've come to expect of Superman, but I do appreciate the fact that Snyder and Goyer strove to step out from behind Richard Donner's shadow in "Man of Steel." While "Returns" makes more attempts at humor, both of them take themselves a little too seriously in my book. I'm not totally opposed to the Zod death, though more could be shown in the editing room to demonstrate that it was necessary to--and did sucessfully--save that family.

I am ready to see a Superman movie that employs a more colorful palette, akin to what we have seen in Marvel movies of late. Superman doesn't need a burgundy cape (like in SR) or a blue so dark it looks black under fluorescent lights. I'm hoping the promised costume tweaks in the upcoming Batman/Superman movie will mean lighter colors (to create a greater contrast with Batman).

I like many of your points. I was hoping this would inspire a large community conversation on Superman movies and opinions as to see all the different view points, but I failed. lol oh well. Thanks!

I liked both, and really don't have a favorite between the two.

Superman Returns was trying to "capture the magic" of the first two films, and it did in some aspects (albeit with better effects) but with the plot trying to emulate that of the original, it felt like an insanity plot at times (real estate again, just on the east coast).

Man of Steel is more of a reflection of our time now, more somber than years past, and how he had to stumble before becoming the hero that he needs to be. I felt the Zod killing scene was done well enough, and I didn't have an issue with it. I saw this one with a friend and he said that this was the best movie he'd seen in twenty years. The best in twenty years? No, but it was still damn good.

That's all I have to say on it.

I also liked both movies. Returns' drama was interesting and it kinda asked the question of what would happen if Superman disappeared and returned. How would he react to the world that's changed while he's gone. Man of Steel kinda gives us the question of how a Man of Steel would grow up living in the world of today. They both have questions and they both in my opinion answer them alright.

As for the Zod death, well I think Zod himself made it quite clear that this was how it was going to end. This is how it had to end because there was really no stopping him and he kinda proves that when he was gonna murder that family. Superman ultimately had to kill him.

Good points. I'm curious if anyone else felt the family was not truly in danger. Maybe it's just me, but the cinematography during that scene made me feel like they could have escaped while Superman was holding Zod's head. Did I miss something ; could they not have ducked and moved forward? Tuck and roll tuck and roll. lol But since the heat vision is through the eyes then what kept Zod from just looking over and killing them? I'll have to re-watch. I liked where they were going but it just seemed silly to me.

With superhero movies, newer is generally going to be a better experience because of effects improvements.
For better, I suppose it depends on what aspect an individual is focused on. One for me is which will I watch again more.. I'm leaning a little more towards man of steel but that could be simply because it is more recent. But I think I like SR better as a character story telling piece with fewer issues.

                    - Great Superman/Clark given they were sticking with Christopher Reeves version. He nailed it. Nice bits of wit that was almost entirely missing from Man of Steel.
                    - Good story with Superman and Lois.
                    - Airplane save was awesome for the time and still is pretty great.

                    MOS
                    - Visit to Krypton and the overall design aspects of Krypton tech was well done.
                    - CG was well done (though was far too much the focus in much of the movie)
                    - Origin of wandering superhero-do-gooder urban legend was a nice change vs. the 'superman pops up out of the blue to save metropolis' movie version. (though Smallville already sort of did this)

Things that killed each movie from being great for me:
                    SR-
                    - Land Crazy Lex Luthor and his bumbling sidekicks. Hate this aspect about the originals too. Hero is only as great as his villain/challenge and this version is too silly. Comics, recent cartoons and Smallville has shown how you make a non superpowered guy a real-ish person and a real threat. Real mistake here trying to hard to continue to link to the original.
                    - Over the top resurrection imagery and theme at the end. Caused bit of eye rolling.

                    MOS-
                    - Zack Snyder signature style! Seems like he creates a few images he wants to shoot and then we bounce around to those places where he gets the image with little logic about how or why we are back there. He really should try to make a movie w/o any cg or camera effects, see if it is a good movie, then go back and layer it in.
                    - Zack Snyder: "Hey lets make it somber. Everything, all the time. Maybe we should subliminal messaging that says 'hey do you guys get how somber this is or what!?!?'" He doesn't seem to get subtlety.
                    - Superman murders 10 thousand+ people in an endless battle in the city. Most any version of superman we know would do everything he could to lead or force Zod out of the city to save people. He did the exact opposite, even proactively, not out of self defense smashing Zod into the sky scrapers. So illogical given the character and all the dialog that had just come before it. This was also action overload. Like the Matrix 2, the fights felt over-long and sterile, no real danger (to anyone who wasn't human).
                    - Dad death was BS. Running to save the f'ing dog when it was beyond dangerous to do so and then standing there for about 25 seconds (I counted..) for dramatic 'No Son don't save me' look was absurd. He could have hopped back to safety long before he got sucked away. They should have left him stuck in someone elses car, after freeing someone else, trying to get free and then just a look to Clark in the last 2 or 3 seconds.

Both were great films. I think with Man of Steel, they looked at the success of the Nolan Batman trilogy and said "yea, make everything dark!". With SR, they were trying to, as has been said, recapture the "feeling" of the Donner films.

I will tell you why I love SR, and it's going to be a very shallow reason. Superman is supposedly the man of steel. But in the comics/cartoons, they always shot at his chest. What if someone shot him in the face? SR answered that question. It may seem juvenile, or as I mentioned before shallow, but it answered a question I've had for ages.

I liked MoS well enough. Going with General Zod instead of immediately introducing Lex Luthor was a nice change, not unlike how Batman Begins went with Scarecrow instead of having the Joker from the outset.
