IronMan is already for rent on Netflix.

    Same day as DVD/Blu-ray rent?
Transformers is also in Netflix and not in vudu?

Do you mean it's already on Netflix's on-demand streaming service?

Transformers was on VUDU in HD and SD variety, but was pulled a few months ago -- temporary, I hope -- due to licensing terms. Unlike physical rental market, digital/PPV/on-demand content is subject to certain blackout periods when only certain provider/channel has a movie. Transformers isn't the only movie like that -- Bourne Ultimatum is missing too (that was was SD & HD rent or purchase).

        Alex,

There's a difference between licensing for physical media and digital media. Are you saying that Iron Man is available for streaming online or just the disks from the mail service?

I did't know. Good you point out that. This is what i can read from the vudu box "Newly release movie added the same day as DVD becomes available". What they forgot to add is "only for buying, not for rent "(not even an small leter about this).
You realize that this propaganda can be misleading...
This is really a good product but the content it is essence... and i am start thinking if this was a good idea.

I think, this is a valid point. There should be a disclaimer that clarifies that day-and-date DVD releases are generally only available for purchase and become rentable only after 30 days. It's important to set consumer expectations at the right level.

Like John pointed out, rental rules for physical disks (Netflix, Blockbuster) are a completely different animal, so if it's any consolation, all VOD providers are hamstrung my 30-day wait and 24-hour watching period (AppleTV, Xbox, PS3, etc.).

VUDU, though, has tried to stand from the pack and make it less painful with discounted rental extensions, 48-hour watching period on some independent titles, and same-day rentals on Warner Bros. titles (not sure if it's all of them or select ones).

I've asked before, and I'll ask again. How many movies come out that are so great that the Vudu owner really cares whether or not they can rent them on day 1 or day 30? After all, these release dates are totally arbitrary, and after you've lived with the luxury of a huge VOD catalog (currently 10,000+ titles and growing really fast), do you really need to watch a specific title on day 1 with a purchase option, vs. day 30 with a rental option? My Vudu "wishlist" is so big, I am never at a loss for being able to enjoy a good movie right now. It doesn't bother me that something like Ironman is still in the purchase window - I'm going to wait for rent in just a few more days - probably in HDX.

Usually, any movie that I want to watch right away on the release day, is a movie I am going to purchase the physical media, like Iron Man and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Re: IronMan is already for rent on Netflix.

To me, the real pain is the availability to purchase for 30 days before it is available to rent. (With the exception of WB.) I don't really feel the desire to purchase many movies on Vudu, so this is just a reminder of the studios' crass and clumsy attempts at manipulating the market and the consumer. If they just delayed rental and purchase so they started together, I'd personally be much happier.

Re: IronMan is already for rent on Netflix.

The impression I get from reading about the licensing situation is that studios are simply trying to milk the film going public as much as possible with the staggered release. They need to make as much as they can selling optical discs at inflated margins before making the film available to a wider audience.

I wonder if anyone within the 'business' side of the film studios appreciates the irony that organisations originally created to foster creative works, now spend most of there energy trying to find ways to stop people viewing the outputs of the artists they employ.

Not that Transforms has any redeeming artistic merit of course...
