Thanks, that was the best (and most honest) answer I got from anyone so far.

I just wish Vudu marketing could come up with a better term than "SD" to describe their picture quality even if it's not technically correct to say DVD Quality. Just saying "SD" or "Near DVD Quality" seems to come off as a negative conotation, when in reality it's superior to most of the crap that is being peddled out there.

    Regards!

Re: What is VUDU's Picture Quality?

Actually, SD is a completely accurate definition since that's what it is. And a lot of people may claim near DVD quality but have worse quality than Vudu. My reasoning for why it's said as near DVD is my logic alone and not an official statement of Vudu. I just don't think it would be honest for them to call it "DVD" quality even though I think it's just as good as my DVDs...

In terms of Near DVD Quality vs. DVD Quality - I really don't know. They probably say "Near DVD Quality" because it allows wiggle room in case there's a bad source, etc. Keep in mind that the video bit rate of a DVD is a lot higher than Vudu. A DVD movie is many times something like 5 to 6 Gigabytes of data. I know, it's MPEG-2, but even if you assume a 75% efficiency improvement from MPEG-2 to H.264 (and I think it's less than that), you are just beginning to get down to the Vudu file size on a 5 Gig sized movie (which is on the small size - I just checked and Pearl Harbor on my hard drive is over 7 Gigs). So Vudu compresses the video a lot more than DVD. So there's going to be some more compression artifacts even using H.264. Most people won't be able to tell it but some probably will. All in all, it's pretty darn good.

I think that's why they use the terminology they do.
How do you find out the filesizes on the VUDU hard drive?

          Thanks for the reply.

All I know is that all is fair in love and war to win the game, even if devices of mass destruction don't really exist.

I appreciate all the discussion and now have a better understanding and appreciation for the product that Vudu offers.

I just hope Vudu works harder on their marketing message to make it easier for the masses to get it too.

          Thanks!!!

You don't. But based on what has been publicly mentioned and what additional info I know from Alpha and Beta testing, here's the info:

SD movies are approximately 1.5 to 2.0 GB in size
HD movies are approximately 3.0 to 4.0 GB in size

Those are rough figures. You could also get a more exact number if you graph your download traffic while streaming a movie.

All we can officially say is that the VUDU box is capable of housing is 100 hours of stored video.

              http://www.vudu.com/product_specs.html

If you need sizes then you will have to do the calculations yourself:

I was just curious. I really have no need to know the file sizes.
I was playing around with the search filters tonight. It makes it much easier to find a title. I noticed there was an HD filter. I don't remember seeing that the other day but maybe I missed it. I'm hoping that filter will get some extensive use later this week.

Very observant, and I would be willing to wager your prognostication will be found to be quite accurate.

P.S. There is a very good reason why it is taking a long time for your Vudu to show the TV titles. You picked a very interesting week to activate your system. Please understand that sometimes your system will be downloading "heads" for movies that are not yet visible to you. When the switch is flipped, suddenly you will see a bunch of new content with instant viewing.
