Problem with LG Netcast TV and Vudu audio output/format...?

    Hi,

I have a 50-series NetCast TV from LG (47LH50), and I connected it to my Home Theater system. My receiver doesn't decode Dolby Digital Plus, but does accept Dolby Digital 5.1 via optical. It appears that Vudu, with the HDX codec only outputs Dolby Digital 2.0 to my receiver. Is this correct, or is there some way I can get a 5.1 Dolby Digital signal out of the LG TV? I read that the Vudu box converts Dolby Digital Plus to Dolby Digital, but I don't know if the LG NetCast TV does.

For that matter, will the LG output Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 if I bought a compatible receiver? (I'm not sure what the LG outputs) The Vudu features listed on the LG mention 5.1, so I presume that there is some way to experience it since the TV doesn't have 5 speakers... :-)

    Thanks!

    Hey,

Do you know if you are getting 5.1 from any other sources plugged into the TV? If not, then it may just be a general TV setting that needs to be changed.

I don't have access to that TV at the moment, but I think there is an option in the audio settings of the TV to select the digital output format (PCM 2.0 or DD 5.1). If you can't find that menu (or I am remembering incorrectly...) post again and I'll look at it tomorrow and let you know.

Well, the ATSC built-in tuner outputs 5.1 but, embarrassingly, I don't have any other HDMI output source. All of my sources capable of 5.1 have optical or coax output and the TV only accepts digital audio via HDMI. I can try to borrow a friend's BluRay player or something this week.

I did check the audio menus (and others) and didn't see anything obvious about output type. In fact, Vudu outputs Dolby Digital 2.0, not PCM 2.0, so I expect it's not a setting thing (it assumes I'm decoding Dolby Digital on the other side).

Just confirming -- when I tested it, I was watching HDX trailers. Are the trailers in DD2.0 not 5.1? The menus indicated that HDX was 5.1, presumably also on the trailers.

If you test it and figure it out, I'd love to know! The video quality is great, and I'd love the audio to match... :-)

      Thanks and Best!

Re: Problem with LG Netcast TV and Vudu audio output/format...?

On our TVs I had to go into the audio settings and set "Use TV speakers" to off. That enabled 5.1 over the digital audio output.

Thanks Hagen... The TV speakers have been turned off, to no effect... I'm wondering if I need a DD+ receiver? Maybe the LG Vudu SW downconverts only to DD2.0, not to DD5.1?

          Thanks!

The DD+ decoder in the LG TV converts DD+ to DD for the digital audio output. All titles that have surround sound should generate 5.1 output.
Which title were you testing with? Note that not all movies on the VUDU service have 5.1 audio.

Ah. Perhaps my choice in selections was the problem. Since I was testing, I was using trailers instead of movies. (shorter and free-er for testing!) Do any of the trailers have 5.1 or do I need to pick a rental for the testing?

              Thanks!

I'm not sure about 5.1 in the trailers.

But you can use the free preview feature to test 5.1 - you can watch the first 2 minutes of most movies for free. Just pick one that has surround sound.

Just following up ... The trailers were only in DD2.0. The movies worked perfectly in regular Dolby Digital 5.1 (not plus) over the LG TV...

                  Thank you for your help!

                  Best Regards...

I'm using the new Vizio VF552XVT and it can't output 5.1 audio from either Vudu or the Amazon On Demand services built into it (it has Netflix too but I haven't tried that yet.) TV stations do come through in 5.1 when broadcast; I double-checked the output setting on the TV while playing a movie too, but my Pioneer receiver is just getting 2-channel PCM. It goes back to Dolby Digital when changing to a TV channel, then to PCM when going back to internet video. I'm assuming this is an error in the TV's design; I just won't watch any movies where the sound matters until it's fixed.

                      Hi Alan,

What type of audio connection are you using (HDMI, Optical, Coax, Analog L/R)?

I'm sure you already checked this, but to cover the basic- Did you set the Digital Audio Out to Dolby Digital? You'll find that under 'Audio Settings' > 'Advanced Audio'.

I'm using the optical output from the TV to the receiver- I double-checked the TV's audio settings, when playing from Vudu it's still set to Dolby Digital but is still outputting 2-channel PCM. When I put the tuner on a TV station that has 5.1 that goes through, but the receiver switches to 2-channel when playing anything from Vudu or Amazon.

I got the TV through Vizio's VIP program so I've let them know about this, but so far they haven't commented.

Alan - I have the same issue as you on the Vizio VF552XVT both Amazon and Vudu are affected. (I am also a VIP program member and have not gotten any responses to feedback either).

There is currently an issue with 5.1 surround sound audio on VUDU-enabled VIZIO TVs. They are aware of the issue and are currently working on it, which will be fixed with a firmware update. I do not have a date for when this firmware update will be available.
