VUDU movies will not fill my tv screen

    Hello All!

I was wondering if someone could tell me why the vudu movies wont fill my lcd widescreen hd tv screen.

No matter what movie I select, no matter if I pick SD, HD or HDX, the movies just wont fill my screen. My TV is set on widescreen, my Samsung Blu-Ray player is set to 16:9 widescreen. When I watch an HD channel from my cable provider that is broadcasting in HD at the time, everything is fine, screen is filled. It's just that these VUDU movies aren't. They just wont fill my screen no matter what I do. If I watch an HD channel on my cable provider that isn't broadcasting in HD at the time, it doesnt fill the screen and that is what is happening with these VUDU movies. It's like they are not actually HD.

Can someone help me please? Thank you!

Re: VUDU movies will not fill my tv screen

My VUDU activated device is a Samsung BD-C6500 and it's connected to a Vizio VW47L Full HD 1080P 16:9 via HDMI.

I finally found 2 movies only, that will play full screen so far. Avatar and Crazy On The Outside. Out of all the many many others I tried, they are all letterbox. I've tried them all on SD, HD and HDX. Makes no difference as far as full screen. The quality is better on HD and HDX, but still in letterbox. Black bars on top and bottom of movie.

I tried 16:9 Normal and 16:9 Wide on the BD-C6500 and makes no difference. The only way I can fill the screen on those letterboxed movies is to set my TV on Zoom instead of wide, which is no good because parts of the picture get pushed off the edges. Other than the letterboxing issue, your movies are of excellent quality. I haven't tried another streaming service that remotely compares to the picture quality. Great selection of movies too. My only other complaint is that I can order movies off my cable provider's OnDemand for cheaper price. Sorry, actually the same price, but then that goes right on my bill so no worry about setting up a seperate account to rent movies. Perhaps, VUDU movies should be a dollar or 2 cheaper, but oh well. You would absolutely beat out those companies in revenue from rental movies if only beating their prices.

      Thanks.

You know, those sources just might not be 16:9 (1.78:1). Films are usually shot in 1.85:1 or even 2.39:1. Many DVDs just cut off anything more than 16:9, but I think we're seeing this on Vudu (which I've noticed, too) because maybe Vudu is giving us something closer to the film source than what we're used to seeing at home. Cable HD is obviously going to be made for 16:9 screens, though, so that's not a fair comparison.

Man, this is a debate that is old as the hills......The concept of OAR vs Cropped images....most people today want all their movies to "fill the TV screen".....Unfortunately, Hollywood does not make all their movies that way.......I mentioned in a previous thread I prefer OAR because I don't want to lose the director's intent, and cropping certain films, Ben Hur, Ten Commandments, and other CinemaScope films can lessen the visual impact these films were meant to produce.........

IMO VUDU has decided to give the best VOD HD viewing experience, bar none......It is slowly accomplishing that goal......I remember the HT installer based XL-XL2 boxes, only HT pros could install them, this showed me VUDU's intent right from the beginning was catering to high end as well as average consumers.....If the cable co. gives you what you want, go with them.......If you have a zoom function on your TV, use it, if it pushes the picture off the edge so you lose picture information, that is very similar to what you are asking VUDU to do.......Don't ask VUDU to destroy scope films by cropping and panning and scanning them......
