Sound with trailers by not movies

I've just purchased a Philips Blu-ray player that comes with two apps - Netflix and VUDU. I have connected it via the digital coaxial out to the digital coaxial in on the back of my Sony home theater.

When I play a Blu-ray disk or a Netflix movie I get great surround sound through my home theater. I have an odd problem with VUDU however. When I play a trailer on VUDU I get sound through my home theater, but if I try to play back a movie or the two free minute trial there is no sound at all.

The Blu-ray player has only two audio options: bitstream and PCM. I've tried setting it on both, but still no sound playing back VUDU films. I've tried setting the home theater input options to PCM only, bitstream only, and auto, but can still only play trailer sound - no movie playback sound.

I've called VUDU tech support and they told me to call Sony. I called them and they told me to call Philips. I called Philips and they said to call VUDU!

    Any suggestions most welcome.

    Hi,

Do you know if you receiver can decode Dolby Digital Plus (DDP+)? If not, then that might be part of the explanation (and why bitstreaming wouldn't work).

Though in that case PCM output would be the way to go. I guess my second questions would be - do you know if your receiver supports multichannel PCM (instead of just 2 channel).

Also (I know you don't want to use it this way, but just as a test) - does the Blu-Ray player have analog outputs, and if so, can you hear anything out of them with a Vudu movie?

It sounds like this is a compatibility problem between the BD player and receiver, probably only occurring when the audio is DD+ (I believe our trailers are just stereo). Hate to pass the buck again, but if that's the case there isn't anything Vudu can do, since it's not a software issue.

My Home Theater receiver is a Sony STR-DG520. The manual says it supports "all Dolby Digital, Pro Logic, and DTS signals". I have the option on the receiver to change my input from PCM to Bitstream or Auto, and I've tried all those options.

The Philips Blu-ray player does not have analog out, only HDMI and digital coaxial out.

I did actually find one VUDU movie last night that plays back with sound - "The Fast and Furious". My receiver indicates it is receiving and playing back a 5.1 Dolby surround sound signal, and distinct sounds come from all my speakers.

I'm going to borrow a friend's Sony receiver that is brand new and try it because it actually has the "Dolby Plus" symbol on it.

Re: Sound with trailers by not movies

I checked "The Fast and the Furious" and it's AC3 (ie. DD), not DD+, so it sounds like DD+ audio is likely the problem in some way...

After some searching on the STR-DG520 it looks like it doesn't support DD+ or multichannel PCM. And unfortunately, since it sounds like your Blu-Ray player only supports outputting the original DD+ or a multichannel PCM, it just won't work. I think your only option for VUDU DD+ movies is a receiver that supports one of those, or a BD player that will transcode the output from DD+ to DD (some do that).

This sounds strange. I'm pretty sure the co-axial audio is supposed to always carry Dolby Digital, if necessary by transcoding from DD+.

              Also --
Are you using a co-axial audio output, or are you running a HDMI cable from your Blu-ray player to the receiver?

If you are using HDMI, there might be weird compatibility issues causing the problem. (E.g, if your receiver claims to understand DD+ 5.1 or PCM 5.1 but actually does not.) Can you try using the audio outputs to connect directly to your receiver?
