    Need video clarification please

Who determines video resolution the VUDU box or the TV? I have the VUDU box set to output 1080p/24 and my Mitsubishi set is 1080p/24 compliant. If I watch a standard movie (Evita) does the VUDU up convert to 1080p/24?

    Many thanks (new user!)

    Hi Bob,

If you have your VUDU box set to output at 1080p/24 over HDMI, then it will upconvert all standard definition movies to that resolution.

I thought I had a handle on this, but now I'm confused again.

Is the SD movie upconverted to 1080/24p during the encoding process or is it upconverted at the box??

Thanks in advance for your reply.

The VUDU box does the upconverting.

Think of the VUDU box as if you were watching a standard DVD using an upconverting DVD player or an HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player over HDMI. It just takes the 480p signal and upconverts the picture to 720p, 1080i, and 1080p.

Well thanks again John!! I really appreciate that and totally got the concept.

I might be delving into Shultzy territory but would you say that for the SD content that's sent to the box is the same resolution as the original SD content that is encoded? And if it's not, do you think that it could be if you raised the minimum bandwidth to 4Mb like you do for HD content?

I like the quality of the VUDU SD so much, I'm almost thinking of dumping the HD and push for the best SD possible, given today's broadband abilities.

              Thanks again John!!

Dump HD??? You didn't get the memo? HD is the future!

Our SD content is very similar to SD content found on standard DVD's. It just looks a lot prettier when it's upconverted. Honestly, there's not much more you can get from SD past 2Mb so raising it to 4 won't make it look any better.

Oh No!!! I definitely want HD, I was just wondering how realistic it is with today's broadband abilities.

There is good but there is always better and then the ultimate is best.

To me the best would be to get both SD and HD in a totally lossless format. But apparently that's just not possible today. So I'm guessing we're able to get either good or better but not best. Since I'm not privy to the encoding process I don't really know which it is. But based on your reply it sounds like we're somewhere between better and best today for SD. So I take your word for it and very much appreciate that. But I'm also thinking that right now we're only getting good to better for HD (even though it still definitely beats SD).

Hope at least some of that made sense.

I'm still to this day still confused about the concept of a compression codec that is not lossless.

I've worked with file compression routines for years, like WinZip and many others, and if I told a customer they could double their hard drive space by using compression but could only get most of their documents back when they uncompress it, well..... they would simply crap their pants. So it's a kind of a new but foreign concept to me still.

                  Best Regards John

                    Re: Need video clarification please

I understand what you are looking for. However, when it comes to lossy vs compressed, there's a point where it reaches diminishing returns. A lot of audiophiles prefer lossy audio over mp3 files but the average person won't notice a difference at all over the quality of the songs so they opt for 3-5MB mp3 for their iPod/Zune rather than taking up huge amounts of disk space. The same can be said for video quality. When you're sitting 10 or 12ft back on your couch and you're watching a movie that's using MPEG4/H.264 compression, the average person really won't notice a difference and most will opt for instant viewing rather than waiting hours for the movies to start streaming.

Since it seems I've caught you in a good mood today, can you tell me if the content sent to the box 24fps, 30fps, 60fps, or something else?? I'm spending big bucks on a new display and knowing that would really help me.

Thanks for your induldgence. I promise, my last question for today.

Our standard definition content is 480p/60 native and our HD is 1080p/24 native.

Yeah, I'm down in Santa Clara. One of our reps Jimmy actually lived in Sacramento for a while.

Ah, the Delta. I remember attempting to water skii out there back when I was 10 years old with a buddy and his family. That didn't end well.
