    No 7.1 on PS3

I am new to VUDU and thought I would go all-in for my first rental and test the system, so I chose a 7.1 movie to rent (Cars 2). While the picture quality was amazing and the sound was excellent 5.1, the back surround channels were dead.
I have a 120GB PS3 slim connected to a Denon 3808Ci via HDMI. Downloaded the most recent VUDU app (it even informed me at the boot up that I had to update to the new version specifically to support 7.1). Set to bitstream with audio on "automatic." This setting works great for BR discs as well as Netflix streaming (any 5.1 encoded films/shows come out as such).
I tried various configurations of the settings to get it to work- turned off bitstream and allowed the PS3 to decode: still no back surround. The only way I got any back surround audio was to set the PS3 for bitstream, then manually choose output and then force any PCM 7.1 settings to the "off" option. This allowed the PS3 to bitstream some form of digital signal that the AVR could decode and it read "Dolby Digital EX" on the screen with back surround working although my receiver informed me that it was only receiving a 5.1 signal that it was matrixing into 7.1.
So..what am I doing wrong? How does one manage to get 7.1 surround on a PS3 and VUDU setup? For the record I have a fast network connection: 37 down, 5 up at test and HDX PQ was great.
I combed this and other forums and saw some related problems, but no one else seemed to be having the exact same issue.
While I realize 7.1 is a luxury and many (most?) people do not even use the back surrounds, I have a very deep living room and that channel really enhances my system. I do not mind a matrixed sound, but since the PS3 is trying to decode it, it won't allow the AVR to do that.
Is there a fundamental problem with the PS3?

      Re: No 7.1 on PS3

There is a bug in the current 7.1 implementation on the PS3.
We already have a fix implemented that is currently waiting for QA approval by Sony. So the next VUDU app update will fix that problem.
      Hagen.

          Mike,

What audio options do you have selected? Could you list your receiver? Are you using HDMI from the PS3 to your receiver?

The PS3 decodes the DD+ and re-encodes in whatever format you specify for audio output (DD5.1, multichannel PCM, etc). It's currently not possible for PS3 apps to output the DD+ "bitstream" directly. However, it does support 7.1 output if you select "Linear PCM 7.1" output and are using HDMI.
