    HD Movies

I would like to purchase HD movies not rent them. Is this possible?

    Re: HD Movies

    Not currently.

The ran a special a while back (when they introduced HD movies to Vudu) we they gave us one of the Bourne movies in HD for free and allowed us to buy the other two.

But to the best of my knowledge, those are the only HD films that have ever been available for purchase.

That is very distressing. So what is the point of this? I would rather just go purchase a Blue Ray DVD?
Does anyone have any idea whether this is going to change? This is the reason I purchased this machine.
Doesnt make any sense. Am I missing something?

You actually got two Bourne movies free and were able to purchase Bourne Ultimatum for $24.99. AFAIK, Ultimatum is temporary gone due to blackout restrictions, but the other two are still available for $19.99.

To answer OP: there's hope that more movies will be for purchase when VUDU gets external storage support. But whether something is available for rent and/or purchase is driven by licensing agreements and studios might be reluctant to allow purchases as it competes with a still-fledging Blu-Ray format.

From a cashflow perspective it can reasonably be argued that you are better off renting, unless it is a movie you are going to watch 5+ times. Most movies are good for 1 or 2 viewings max (some less than 1 viewing).

In my case its not about the money. I really would like this feature to own. Does Apple TV do the same thing?

As far as I know, there are no digital distribution service (including AppleTV) that has HD available for purchase. Everything is rental only at the moment. As digital distribution becomes more mainstream, this should change.

JohnA is correct. AppleTV does not allow you to purchase HD content either. OK, correction, you can purchase HD TV shows but not HD movies. Also, on AppleTV, you can only rent HD movies on the AppleTV and they are only viewable on the AppleTV (ie: not in iTunes or on an iPod/iPhone, etc.)

There is no such thing as a "Blue Ray DVD".
First of all it's Blu-ray Disc or BD. And they have absolutely nothing to do with DVDs. The disc structure has more in common with a CD than any DVD.

Xbox Live is the same way. Only rental for HD movies but purchase for HD TVs shows. I still have some HD shows from Xbox Live I purchased two years ago when the movie download service first launched.

From looking through PSN Store on PS3, they won't allow HD purchases either.

So it sounds like all the legitimate digital distribution services are limited by the studios when it comes to purchasing HD content. Once they lift the restrictions, we should have HD available to own.

I have to ask, why buy a copy when you could always just download it again in the future? This allows you access content on a whim with out having a house full of USB hard drives (or god forbid, plastic cases!).

You have keyed in on one of the hardest to grasp benefits of the Vudu - folks are so used to "owning" things in the past that a VOD lifestyle is just hard for them to come to grips with. Vudu user Redwein is constantly pointing out the benefits of not purchasing anything, but it often flys around the head of others here (and on other forums).

Agreed. Even with an HD movie costing $5.99 to rent (NOT $4.99 cheesy boy), you would still need to watch it a minimum of 4 times to equate to a BD purchase price of about $25.00.

How many movies do you really watch 4 times? I know my kids will do that and it makes sense to purchase for them but they don't care about HD and so SD purchases are fine....
