I'll take the Psyclone HDMI switcher out of the loop, and go direct from Vudu to the Sony TV.

I'll report back later, with what happens.

    Thanks again.
Cool... Thanks for walking the extra mile. I was also thinking about if anything would change (for the better) by switching the VUDU Video output to maybe 480p or 720p, for example.

If the box is bad, Vudu will likely give you some credits for the movies you weren't able to enjoy fully. Sorry for the problems.

On the other hand, have you rebooted the Vudu (i.e. power cycle by pulling the plug)?

Always a good idea, since this is a little computer. And yes, I just tried it, and no change.

But here's a question: When HDMI is used, are the digital audio outputs, coax and optical, muted?

Perhaps if I just went with component cables?

Also, any idea whether the digital optical and the coax digital are both always on? Or if you use them simultaneously, will they mute? I only ask this because when I was troubleshooting I had them both connected to the amp, using different inputs.

Edit: I just did a forum search, and it appears all the outputs, HDMI, Coax and optical, are always 'on.'

The search for the answer continues.

              Hmmm

Bummer dude, this type of "out of the box" failure is practically unheard of. I'm starting to agree with your original conclusion - infant mortality. Where did you get your box - perhaps BB where you could do an exchange?

Re: No Digital Audio - Help!

Yes, it was BB. Most of the stores in my area are sold out, but I'll try to find one. They'll exchange it, I'm sure.

Any idea how to convince Vudu to let me re-download the 4 movies I rented? I haven't been able to watch any of them....no, correction...I can watch, but not listen, lol

Thanks very much for the assist....

You can fill out the form at http://supports.vudu.com/contact.php with your details. I'd wager a pound of top grade euro cheese that they'll give you credit for the bad experience so you can watch and listen to them on your new box.

                        New Box = Same Problem

Well, I guess my Denon AVR-5700 is incompatible with the Vudu.

I bought a new box, and hooked it up. HDMI to the TV, and Coaxial Digital to the Denon.

Worked fine at first. I heard the guided setup...the voice, the music, everything.

Then, as soon as it downloaded and installed the software update? Silence. No digital output at all....at least not one recognized by the Denon.

So, something in the update changed the audio firmware, so that my receiver cannot detect it.

Well, in this case the receiver has to win.

It cost $3000 when I bought it about 8 years ago, and its handled every digital input I've ever thrown at it...from satellite to HD Tivo to Blu-Ray to PC to DVD to OTA HDTV to HD Camcorders to even the toslink from a portable CD player.

So from a potentially enthusiastic customer, a word to the tech department...something in your software update may have killed the digital sound. Because I had it...and after the update, I don't.

Thanks again to everyone for all your help. I appreciate it.

That is the type of bug the Vudu engineer Volker thrives on - he's in Germany for the holidays, but I'd bet he can fix this.

Yeah, don't take your box back yet. We've got another user that I know of who has had problems with Denon equipment. It's possible that there's a firmware update for your Denon - you may want to look into that. But certainly, if it worked during guided setup, it should have continued to work. Volker will jump right on this after the holidays. So please don't take your boxes back yet! I'm certain we can get this working. Volker's got to fix an HDMI audio issue that happens after going into the Vudu Labs section. So I'm sure he can look at this with it as well.

Say, did you try setting the audio burst setting to "On" - try that. It's under advanced audio.

I'm still wondering if you can get sound from your tv speakers via HDMI.

I could be wrong but I don't think you answered that one.

Definitely a Conflict with the Denon

                                OK...I've narrowed it down further.

Yes, the HDMI audio comes through the Sony TV. So it is putting out digital audio. Thanks HH.

(Unfortunately though, the Sony XBR does not allow digital audio to pass from the HDMI to its digital optical output. The Sony's digital output is only hot when using the tuner. So, I can't loop it from the Vudu through the Sony's HDMI and out via digital optical to the Denon)

So...there's a fundamental incompatibility between the upgraded Vudu and the Denon. Again, all audio sources worked prior to the software upgrade.

And thanks for the encouraging words! I'll keep it, in hopes that a Vudu genius can fix me up.

                                Happy holidays, everyone!
