    No Digital Audio - Help!

    Hi...New to this forum.

I hooked up my new Vudu today, and thought everything was OK.

I used coaxial audio, and heard everything fine during the guided setup. So, at that point, all was well.

Then I downloaded 'A Christmas Story' in HDX. And after 4 hours, I went to play it. Video was great, but no digital audio. No audio at all using coax digital.

    Tried digital optical next...nothing.

    Tried analog third...and that worked.

So to cross-check, I tried some trailers. Nothing in digital...but analog worked fine.

Did I buy a fried unit?

    Any advice will be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Post your SYSTEM ID here so the support engineers can peek at your box and see if there are any problems.

Leave your system plugged in and "online" so the engineers can peek at it. JohnA or one of the other fine support engineers will usually post back here anything they find, however they may send you a private message instead.

Do you get audio via the digital coax connection you made on other movies/trailers/internet content?

            Thanks, will do.

BTW, I've crossed checked the system. On my Denon receiver, I've replaced the Vudu's output with a digital output from a DVD player...works fine.

And, I've tried the Vudu on several different inputs on my receiver, coax, optical and analog. Only analog works.

I have seven different digital audio sources going through the Denon...twin Tivo S3's, a Denon DVD player, a PS3, a Media Center PC, an HD Camcorder, and my CableCard-ready Sony XBR LCD widescreen. The only one that's digitally silent is the Vudu. So the other components are operating correctly.

            Thanks again.

              Nope.

When I first did the guided setup, I got audio using digital coax. I heard the 'voice,' walking me though the setup procedure. But since then, no movie, no trailer, nothing else works with digital coax or optical now. I only hear audio using analog, in all sources.

              Thanks

In System Settings what do you have the Digital Audio and HDMI Audio set to??? Maybe try setting both of them to Stereo and then combinations there of.

                  Hi...

Yep, tried both Digital Audio and HDMI Audio on all settings. Nolo.

The only way to hear this box is analog.

Maybe I should swap it out.

Out of curiosity when you plug in the optical cable do you see the little red light coming out of the other end of the cable??

Oh and if you use HDMI to your TV can you get audio from your TV??

Question 1...yes. The red light is there.

Question 2...I use HDMI just for video, and go direct to my receiver with digital audio, either coax or optical.

                      Thanks again

Yes but if your HDMI is connected to your TV then you should be able to get sound from your TV irrelevant of what audio system your using.

Then some TVs like mine have an optical and/or digital out from the tv that you can connect to your audio system.

My Samsung has 4 HDMI inputs and 1 Optical Out. So I can connect my Optical Out to my Bose Audio system and get DD 5.1 from it.

                        That's why I asked.

Re: No Digital Audio - Help!

                          Thanks, I appreciate it.

My TV is set up via digital optical into my receiver, for straight HDTV, w/o any STB in the loop.

All of my HDMI sources go first into a Psyclone HDMI switcher, then into the TV. As I said, I put the digital optical right into the receiver. But realizing HDMI also carries audio, I can hear audio via the TV from the two Tivo S3's, and the Denon DVD player. But again, the Vudu is silent using digital.

I will gladly pursue options, but I believe it's a bad box.

I mean, after years of working with digital audio sources, coax and optical, and HDMI and so on, you get a knowledge base that allows you to cross-check a problem, 1, 2, 3...and eventually if everything else in the system works fine, in multiple scenarios, and this one component does not, in multiple scenarios, at some point you have to conclude it's not working as it should.

                          No?

So here's a follow-up question. If I've paid for 4 rentals with a bad box, if I have to swap it out, will Vudu let me re-download the movies onto the new one? Or have I just paid for silent movies?

                            No?
Well sure. The ultimate would be to swap out the VUDU box. But unless you have another one lying in the refrigerator, it will take some time to do that.

So not knowing anything about your setup, I was just thinking out loud some things I would personally do to isolate the problem.

Maybe you have already done this, but I always go back to bare bones basics when I troubleshoot. You've multiple devices and switches and who knows what, so I would go HDMI directly from VUDU to TV. and if you can't get any sound then I guess I would say VUDU is a strong culprit.

This might be a dumb statement but there is no audio out unless you're playing some content. Also some content is encoded in stereo and some in DD 5.1 so that would make a difference in the results of your testing too.

Anyways just putting my 2 cents in, because it's an interesting predicament.

Good Luck. Let us know how it works out for the benefit of the hive.

                              Good idea.

Like many of us, I'm reluctant to undo what's working, just to troubleshoot something that's not...but I will.

I'll take the Psyclone HDMI switcher out of the loop, and go direct from Vudu to the Sony TV.

I'll report back later, with what happens.

                              Thanks again.
