    vudu for 720p screens

Hi all -- Thinking about a Vudu. I have a 32" 720p LCD screen (Samsung). Does the box have output settings that can be configured for this type of screen? For example, will it scale up SD content? Does it need to scale down 1080 content? I have an Oppo DVD player set to 720p output and that seems to work the best.

I have a 720p projector hooked to it and it works great (it scales as needed).

My 50" LG is 720p and Vudu looks fantastic on it.

I have a 32" LCD 720p in my bedroom and VUDU works fine using 720p output. And FYI I can see a difference between HD and HDX titles.

Just remember that you'll want to connect your VUDU to the TV with HDMI in order to get 720p. If you use component output, you'll be limited to 480p - which still looks great and DVD-quality, but isn't 720p.

              Re: vudu for 720p screens

              Hi...

              I have a 720p Sony V40XBR1.

In the opinions of the experts here, which would give the best picture quality?

              1.) Setting the Vudu to 720p output....or

2.) Setting it to 1080i and letting the monitor downscale it?

The reason I ask is, many AV experts say if you have an expensive, top-of-the-line monitor (which the Sony was a few years ago), it's bound to have better up and downscaling abilities than a $300 DVD player, HD Tivo or other less expensive gear.

I guess part of my question involves how the Vudu processes its signal to output 720p.

              Thoughts?

That's a raging debate. I've always heard to use the native resolution of your monitor. So I've always used 720p. I don't know if the downscaling in the Vudu is better than my TV. Frankly, I probably couldn't tell the difference. I'd say you should try it out and see what you think for your own tastes.

Spending a few minutes testing both and comparing the difference yourself is far more valuable than any advice you find on the internet (except my post of course).

                    Thanks...

I guess I'm just trying to 'optimize in theory,' since the Vudu and my other sources always look great regardless of the configuration.

My usual setup is to let anything capable of 1080i output do that, and my monitor downscales it. The only exception would be a DVD player...no need to have the player upscale from 480p to 1080i then be brought back down by the monitor to 720p...I've heard scaling twice is looking for trouble.

I would guess that setting the Vudu box output to your monitor resolution would be the best way to go.

Yes, I've read lots of "experts" claim that whether the scaling is done by either the TV or the VUDU box, your eyeballs are the best judge of which device gets the best job done.

There's not an inherent advantage to picking the device source device over the TV.
