Vudu Atmos with a 5.1 setup

Hoping maybe Jake can chime in to give me some info. I currently have a Roku Ultra -> AVR -> 4K TV. All HDMI connections. My AVR setup is only 5.1 DD+.

When I play UHD titles on Vudu (which most have Atmos) they sound really good, even on my 5.1 system. One specific movie where I actually hear a difference is the UHD of Pacific Rim. When playing this movie in UHD, I hear in the mix that some of the sounds from Gypsy Ryder (the robot) come through my surrounds - which actually give it a very cool surround effect. When I switch to the HDX stream, it doesn't sound as good, and those computer sounds now come through the center/fronts.

Am I getting a different DD+ audio stream when watching UHD w/ an Atmos track? Is it mixed differently to somehow be better even on 5.1 setups?

    Hey,

Interesting observation... two possible explanations I can think of for the differences you might hear with HDX and UHD (and both could also be true):
    1. Warner may have remixed the soundtrack for the UHD/Atmos release - Atmos has a "DD+ 5.1 core" so it's backwards compatible, but the UHD version may have been from a different source
    2. The UHD stream audio has 2x+ the bitrate of the HDX audio, so there may be more detail in the UHD version

Thanks for the info Jake. Definitely an interesting mix. I don't get the same on Apple TV 4K version via iTunes.....but the ATV just doesn't sound as good overall, so not a true comparison.

Maybe not the most scientific comparison, but in a blind survey everyone polled here thought our DolbyVision & HDR10 encodes looked better than Apple's We're working on ATV support, but can't give any timeline. But generally expect to see even more support for new devices and studios in 2018!

What version are you comparing the UHD Atmos track too? Streaming SD, HD? I am wondering if you have heard the Blu-Ray with DTS Master Audio. If so then like Jake said it might be a remix. I don't have UHD Pacific Rim yet but it is on my wish list.

I only have this title as UHD streaming. So I was comparing it to: switching to the HDX version in Vudu on the Roku, and the same title streaming 4K from the iTunes store.
