    LG OLED, Vudu, and Atmos

Has anyone heard of a solution, such as a firmware update for 2016 LG OLED tv's, to be able to run Dolby Digital +, or atmos over ARC? I'm sure VUDU is not the only one seeing the value of this market. I can use my samsung ubd-k8500, to run DD+ with my LG B6, but it does not allow Vudu's UHD, only HDX.

    Hello CEDRUM,

2016 LG TVs do not support DD+ over ARC. This is a limitation on the LG TVs. I believe the highest audio type through ARC is DD 5.1. You can contact LG to see if they plan to have a future update to support DD+ over ARC.

    Thanks
    Tam

For anyone who wants to see LG support Atmos over ARC, put in a Voice of Customer request. Call LG Support 800-243-0000, tell them you have an OLED request to immediately be put through to VIP support. They will take info from you including the model # and serial # and then file the request, which they say is considered when deciding what to build into firmware updates. The woman I spoke to seemed to know immediately that this was a known issue and suggested it could be resolved in a firmware update, so hopefully it's already on LG's radar. With any luck filing enough of these requests will bump it up in the queue.

I don't use ARC personally but having read similar posts in the past the problem way we'll be that ARC is tupicallly handled by optical, which techinallly doesn't support the bandwidth needed for something like Atmos. If ARC could technically be handled by HDMI then this might be a moot problem. The other issue I can seee here is that manufacture figure if you're using Atmos you would have a dedicate separates set-up but if that's the case then why would they offer 4K streaming apps in their TV's. Truth be told it's a similar issue for 3D as well but since less tv's are 3D these days it hardly ever comes up. In other words most 3D TV doesn't support 3D in most of their streaming apps I.E. Vudu. In that case there are numerous reasons as well but it's been discusssed over and over so I'm not going into it.

It basicallly comes down to the fact that these things will take time to get fixed, if ever (3D never was), and likely requires more, newer hardware with a separate remote and more cables. Getting something like a Roku Ultra sales a lot of these type of problems regardless of if it's what people want to do, it's just what's available.

Re: LG OLED, Vudu, and Atmos

Just purchased an LG OLED that I am expecting later in the week.

First, do the 2016 OLEDs even have VUDU on them? I couldn't find them on the list from VUDU.

Also, if I do want Atmos, would I plug two HDMI cables, going from the TV to the receiver, and then the receiver to the TV (bypassing ARC altogether).

Re: LG OLED, Vudu, and Atmos

I don't think there is anyway to get Dolby Atmos with a 2016 LG OLED using the app on the TV. Now LG is coming out with an 4K blu-ray player with Dolby Atmos AND IF it has a Vudu app on it then your problem is solved as you will be able to use the app on the player and you can run one HDMI out to the TV for video and it has a 2nd HDMI out for audio which you would run to either a receiver or a Dolby atmos enabled soundbar.

I just ordered an E6 so I am not an expert but I don't see any other way to get both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos other than this solution unless LG updates the TV in the future to enable Atmos over ARC.

I don't think this will work but I have not tried it.
