    HDMI Audio Problem

    Hey All,

This isn't a Vudu problem but what the heck, someone here might know what's going on.

My receiver is a Denon AVR-2808CI - brand new - bought it about 2 months ago and it's like 3rd or 4th down from the top of Denon's receivers. It has two HDMI inputs and I've been running my DVD (LG upconverting - don't have model number handy right now) player into one and the Vudu into the other.

My DVD player doesn't get a lot of use but we've begun playing some Christmas DVDs for the kids lately (that I didn't think worth ripping) and I noticed that my audio was not correct. The only audio option I get from the Denon is Multi-Channel audio. Even when running a DD5.1 or DTS source DVD, the Denon only will give me Multi-Channel as an option (and on DTS tracks I get NO audio). The Multi-Channel audio is so messed up it's putting center channel dialog on the rear channels.

So I begun trying to play with settings on both the DVD player and the receiver. Nothing would work. I then verified that the Denon indeed properly decodes DD5.1 over HDMI by playing one of my Bourne movies. That worked. So I swapped HDMI ports. Still the same problem with the DVD player. Then I changed out HDMI cables - no dice.

Then I hooked up a Toslink cable and configured the Denon to use an optical input. That worked fine. But I didn't want to leave it that way as my only unused Toslink port is on the front of the Denon.

Finally, I took the HDMI cable from the DVD and went straight to my TV (LG-50PC1DR). Then the TV has an optical output running to the Denon. Things work fine this way. NO PROBLEMS. I get all my audio correctly.

So the LG TV decodes the audio from the HDMI port of the DVD player just fine. But for some reason my Denon will not.

Anyone have any ideas why? I'd really rather run everything through the Denon...

    Jon

    Re: HDMI Audio Problem

Sometimes there is an internal settings option on the DVD player where you can enable HDMI audio. My DVD player isn't HDMI but I know that in order to play DTS I needed to go to an internal setup menu and select DTS as an available output.

Thanks, but I get audio over HDMI. It works fine if I connect the DVD player to my TV's HDMI port and then the optical output of the TV to the receiver. So all the audio formats are enabled over HDMI. The problem I can't figure it is why the HDMI audio connection does not work between the DVD player and the receiver. Well, it works but I only get PCM and not bitstream...

on the denon menu, what are the input mode and decode mode settings for the hdmi port that your dvd player is on?

I don't have a lot of choice. I can set it to decode Auto, PCM or DTS. It's supposed to automatically detect the bitstream and then let you select among the choices for what you want to use. It works great for the Vudu as it's running in on HDMI configured the same way as well...

            Re: HDMI Audio Problem

just curious if you saw the same options. i was having some audio problems previously with my ps3 (i have the denon 3808) and when i changed it from auto to force a setting it behaved differently.

that being said, i've seen some comments (albeit quite old) that there were some compatibility issues between the LG and Denon - but theoretically that has been fixed in a denon firmware update since then (being the wise technologist that you are, i'm assuming you're up to date on the firmware).

there was another brand receiver (will remain nameless) that i was considering but it had problems with the hdmi communication to the directv hd dvr. so, there is something to be said with the compatibility between the two parts.

all that being said, i'm not being very helpful. my only attempts would be to take the setting off of auto - and if that doesn't help, perhaps send a note to denon with the specific model of your LG DVD player to check for compatibility.

I'm surprised we don't have the same setups since the differences between the 2808 and 3808 aren't that great (bigger amp, but the only real SW difference I think is Network control). I almost bought the 3808 but a friend convinced me I didn't need it and that my speakers might not be able to handle it. The only real thing it offered me other than the bigger amp was the network music capability. With a Roku Soundbridge, Roku Photobridge and an AppleTV, I really didn't need another music player!

Anyhow, I will contact Denon - that's probably a good idea. Not sure what my FW version is. How would you upgrade it? Via the serial port? On your's its easy since you have the ethernet port.

i forgot about the fact that the 2808 didn't have the network port. i guess i don't know how you update the firmware other than bringing it to a repair shop. i'm not sure the serial port would work based on how its built. probably back to calling denon...

i went with the 3808 primarily because of the 4 HDMI ports (didn't want to have to immediately purchase a switch) and some slightly higher end componentry inside.

Yeah, the extra HDMI ports would have been nice. Oh well, I'll give Denon a call. Any updates should be under warranty since I've only had it about 2 months...
