    UHD Streaming with Atmos

I am currently streaming VUDU UDX via a Sony Blu-Ray player (1080p) through a Denon x4300h AVR (Atmos and 4K capable) to an Epson 5030UB projector (1080p). As expected, the best sound I can get from the streaming is DD+.

I am considering upgrading the projector to the Epson 5040UB (4K capable). If I change my streaming device to a Roku Ultra, connected to the AVR HDMI input, will VUDU now stream UHD with Atmos, i.e. will the VUDU server recognize the downstream Epson 5040UB, thus enabling UHD streaming?]

If everything in that HDMI path supports 4K and HDCP 2.2, The Roku Ultra should support UHD playback.

Just learned that the Epson 5040 supports 4k at 30fps, but not 60fps. That could make a difference. Any thoughts?.

Technically VUDU 4K movies are 24fps. Though I'm not sure if the Roku can output native 24fps. Conversion of 24fps to 30fps looks pretty bad, so it might require 60fps output to work... not sure

Also, note the Epson 5040UB is not really 4K, it's 1080p native, but with "4K Enhancements" (whatever that means... looks like it can accept 4K input and downscale it? May end up being able to do 10 bit color, but not 4K)

The Epson 5040UB recognizes a 4K signal, and then creates a near 4K image through pixel shifting. All that matters in this case is that the projector you use recognizes a 4K signal, and that you have a receiver that supports 4K and Atmos.

The projector does not support Dolby Vision (What Vudu uses for HDR currently), and HDR10 playback may not work from other sources using a Roku Ultra I believe (FPS setting limitation, but I may be wrong), although you can get HDR10 using an AppleTV (Not ideal since Vudu doesn't have HDR or 4K support on AppleTV app yet, but great for iTunes content as of right now) set to 30 fps HDR10 or lower.

If your intent is to playback Vudu content with no form of HDR, but playback the 4K transfer and Atmos audio, then yes, that specific projector and streaming player combination should work great for you.
