    Professional home theater advice?

Has anyone ever gotten an installer to do a "plan" or redesign? Our current home theater room as kind of an awkward layout, and I'm considering moving things down to the basement, but it's also not an ideal space. I am looking for advice on everything from wiring to replacing the main TV. Does anyone know of installers who might handle some kind of consulting first? Or would I look for someone other than an installer?

I second Best Buy. For $100 deposit (towards your equipment purchase) they'll come out and spend time with you to make sure you get the right stuff.

Having said that the consultation you have and the equipment they push on you is ENTIRELY up to whatever tech comes out to your home. If you don't feel 100% confident that the tech is working for you (being pushy or trying to add on too many things) ask for someone else.

I've done several installation jobs behind Best Buy installers where they sold the customer the moon when it wasn't what they needed. Some guys are very sales focused while others are customer focused. You just have to find the right one.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I had a MyerEmco guy out today, and I found a small, independent installer in the area who is going to come out for a consultation next week. None of them required a deposit to come out and do an initial consultation. That's what I was really looking for, at least two opinions so I could get an idea of which one is more unbiased.

I wouldn't trust anyone on a forum to tell you what to buy without looking at your space first. Not that their opinions are invalid, just they don't have a full sense of what would be required or needed to do your theater justice.

I used to do free consultations if the customer seemed serious. If they were just wishful thinking it was $50 for my time and gas.

Technically, it's 'any home theater purchase $499 & up.'

                  Re: Professional home theater advice?

if you're not buying $500 worth of stuff you don't need a consultation.

I mention it because it's not the end of the world if you don't get all your stuff there--you can still put the $100 to use.
