Xbox One has serious streaming issues and a terrible navigation

    Hi folks,

While I'm a big fan of the VUDU service in general, even going so far as to pay to convert almost 100 DVDs and BDs into digital copies and re-purchasing two seasons of Game of Thrones (1 and 2) to go along with the copy of season 3 I already owned for this service so that I had them all available from one single digital video service, I have to say that I'm extremely frustrated with my VUDU experience in my living room when I try to enjoy VUDU on my Xbox One.

When it works, I love it, but far too often I have videos that won't play, or if/when they do play, they drop out before I can even finish a TV episode, let alone a movie, and typically once this happens the service fails to work at all until I abandon trying to use it and come back later to attempt it again.

I have a fiber optic ISP, 30mbps down / 15 mbps up , and my Xbox One is connected to my router via Ethernet cable, and yet still these constant errors plague me with VUDU. Even when other services on Xbox One (such as Netflix or YouTube) are not experiencing issues. This is very, very frustrating! It makes me feel like I set my money on fire (~$120-$150 to this point) for how rarely this service works properly when I attempt to use it in my living room.

I want to believe that I made the right choice with VUDU, and it tends to work better on my PC, iPhone, and iPad (though they still sometimes have issues too), but my experiences with it on Xbox One have been pretty darn rough!

And sadly, that's how I feel regardless of the other serious issue here: The Xbox One VUDU app's navigation.

It's... pretty terrible. I'm very pleased with how I can browse my collection on VUDU's website; it's a nice grid of tiles, I can sort it by purchase date, titles, ratings, etc., it's great. Contrast that with the Xbox One VUDU app, where you get one row of tiles, the movies cannot be sorted, and each screen only displays a handful of titles at a time. Super slow and annoying to have to be dealing with these limitations! Especially with 100 movies in my collection.

Lastly, speaking of Game of Thrones, browsing TV seasons is a pain as well. Once you've selected a season of a show, you can't see all episodes without having to click on another tile to go to it, and then if the season has any bonus feature videos, they're all clumped up front as 'episode 0' episodes, getting in the way when all you want to do is choice from the actual episodes of the show. It's a mess, and it's clunky, and it takes longer than it ought to.

This is just not acceptable, guys/gals! I've put a lot of my money into this service, I love what it's trying to be/do, but these things need to change, and fast, because I feel ripped off right now.

    Disappointed and frustrated,

    - Mark

The VUDU app on Xbox One is a big problem....

This is from a ticket that I had opened and basically gave up on getting resolved because support didn't seem to understand....

The Xbox One app is unusable for streaming at this time. Last night my Fiance and I attempted to watch the Movie "Her".

It fired up right away and started streaming, but shortly (first 5 minutes), the movie would stop and you would get the buffer circle of death. After seeing it, it starts playing the movie again, but within the next few minutes it happens again.

At this point it starts playing again and then it happens again and VUDU app then recommends downgrading the quality. My connection is good and I shouldn't have to downgrade the quality, but needless to say, I did.

Shortly after it begins streaming again, it eventually buffers again. And then VUDU app gives an error saying something like "The content is not available, see xbox.com/status".

So after all of this, my Xbox One's are my primary VUDU device and I cannot watch a movie successfully. This happens all the time. It's been a while since I've watched something, but it has happened almost everytime.

Before you say it's my connection. It's not my connection because I used the network utility in the settings to check my bandwidth and had a report 56Mbps down and 35 Mbps up.

Also I know its not my connection because using the TV app on my Vizio HDTV connected to the same network was able to stream the movie without issue in HDX.

To use that it took me an extra 30 minutes to re-configure my home theater system just to make it work.

For a newely released latest and greatest game console, the Xbox One. It should not have any issues streaming media. Over 5 to 6 million of them have been sold and right now the experience is frustrating because I can't successfully stream any movie, let alone the missing features of sorting and etc.

Is there any status on when this will be fixed?

If there is a way I could help test, I would gladly assist. This is the only device other then cable box connected to my TV's so it's imperative that I can access my VUDU movie collection consisting of more then 800+ titles.

I know from reading on the forums that you all are working on an update, but it's unacceptable that basic functionality, streaming a movie, doesn't work.....

I did contact Vudu support, but they could only offer a few mild solutions (which did not work) before telling me that otherwise it is out of their hands and that I needed to contact Microsoft's support. I have not done so at this time. I'm wrapped up with work and even if that wasn't the case, I have to imagine there's nothing Microsoft is going to suddenly do to fix it. If I do contact them at some point, it will only be so that I might hope I'm one of multiple people complaining about both of my issues, hoping that together we get their attention so they can address both issues down the road.

In the short term (next few months to a year), I'm expecting the problems to persist and the navigation to be terrible in their app.

It was a tease when I got to see how Sony Bluray players handle Vudu; their app is great and much more like Vudu.com. And an entire movie was watched without a single error. If only that's how it worked on Xbox One.

They closed my support ticket basically stating the exact same thing....

However, it is still a persisting problem and is not resolved. But it doesn't seem that opening another ticket will do any good......

I can't imagine leaving it so broken for so many customers is doing them any business favors. I certainly wouldn't use Vudu if that was my experience previously. But now that I own a lot of digital media with them, I don't have much of a choice....

Hopefully when Target releases there Target Ticket app, it won't have the same problems and I can just use there service to access my Vudu/UV library... In the meantime, I am stuck buying a cheap roku as a work around

its really bad just thought I would throw in my vote for an upgrade experience. I will happily test the app.

On a side note I also wrote Microsoft this complaint.

The xbox one version of vudu is terrible. I use it on my ps4 and it works great 99 percent of the time. I used it on Xbox one once. Never again.... If I were you I'd just pretend vudu doesn't exist for a few months. Check back later and see if they got around to caring about the xbox one app yet. Ive given vudu many hundreds of dollars so far and plan to give them thousands in the future. However, if I only had an xbox one, I would have stopped using their service after the first day. I'm not sure why they don't care about the xbox one, but they're only hurting themselves by putting out an app in such shoddy condition. You only get one chance to make a first impression, and first impressions are everything.

I have also been having issues with vudu with xbox one from day one. It only happens on the xbox. The movie will start to play and the it will cut out and say I have no internet. I have comcast internet. 50mb down, 15mb up. Like I said this only happens with xbox one. I never have issues on chromecast or any of my mobile devices. It really sucks.
I decided to watch my network monitor on my router and while I was watching the movie I got a spike of 1029567.17KB/s incoming request from Vudu which crashed my internet! What is up with that??
That looks like it is the problem. It's sending over 1GB of information.

Re: Xbox One has serious streaming issues and a terrible navigation

Just want to re-iterate what everyone else is saying with my own experiences.

I was about to look into doing some serious rewiring of my entertainment area so I could hardwire my Xbox to see if it helped with Vudu streaming, but now I see everyone else is having the same issue.

I also use Vudu extensively - have done many disc-to-digital conversions. I've got a Roku in my bedroom that I use Vudu on and I've used it on my PS3 and PS4 extensively.

I just recently got an Xbox One and decided to make it my primary movie/tv device since it works with Logitech Harmony remotes (the PS4 does not). And having come from the newly refreshed PS4 app, I was pretty stunned by just how terrible the Xbox One app's interface is. It's trying too hard to be in the style of the Xbox interface, and needs to just ditch it for their standard interface. It's practically unusable.

And then you try to start streaming and it's impossible to watch a movie in any of the available qualities without buffering or getting an error message saying my connection doesn't support HDX - even though I stream HDX on my PS4 and Roku all the time. Twice I've rented a film on the Xbox One app and then had to switch over and watch it on my PS4 because of the Xbox app's connection problems.

Fortunately I have those other options, but the Xbox App has put a big dent in me using the Xbox One as my primary streaming device. Hopefully Vudu/Microsoft can fix this app soon.

I wish I had thought to read this forum before I redesigned my home theater system with Xbox One as the central and only streaming device! We have tried to watch 3 movies on Vudu over the last couple of months and not once have we made it through without having at least 4 or more interruptions where we are told to "Retry"! The only way to get it going again is to back all the way out and restart the Vudu app. Kind of ruins the movie. We used to love Vudu, but now....not so much. I cannot believe that Vudu does not fix their clunky Xbox One app and pressure Microsoft into fixing the streaming issues. This only started with the Xbox One app, nothing else has changed. It works fine on the blu-ray player in the other room where we rarely go. So I guess our days of watching Vudu are about to end since they do not seem to care enough to fix the problem. Based on what I see on the web, this is no new issue.

                    Very disappointed.

Well folks, 1 1/2 year later still the same thing. Vudu used to be my favorite app on my PS3 to watch movies and tv shows, but now that I moved on to XBox one, I can't use it as I don't have the patience to surf thru 1200 tiles to figure out what I want to see and then have them stop streaming all of a sudden. Now, I guess I'll have to search other providers to buy content from that works with XBox One. I wonder if they do it on purpose so that you'll have to buy content thru them???

                          - Mark

You aren't the only one who is disappointed and frustrated. I am as well. I bought a whole series of a particular TV show and every time I try to watch it on my Xbox One on the VUDU app it buffers or quits unexpectedly. I have contacted VUDU about it and all they keep telling me is that it must be my internet connection. My internet connection is fine. I'm baffled that Hulu or Netflix works fine without any issues. VUDU needs to address this issue with the Xbox One. You would think that with so many people having this same issue they would address it and fix it. Hope they address it soon otherwise they're going to lose customers.

With the announcement of Xbox One S and it's support for UHD/4K playback. The release of the new hardware would be a perfect time for a new Universal Windows App (UWA) that supports Xbox One S (UHD/4k) and makes Vudu usable for those with large libraries....

                            Just sayin....
