Star Wars The Last Jedi UHD is too dark, unwatchable in UHD on Xbox One X

I'm on Xbox One X. I've got MAD MAX Fury Road and Thor Ragnarok in UHD and those play fine. When I watch TLJ it darkens the whole UI for Xbox. The menus I pull up to navigate the Xbox while watching The Last Jedi are dark as well. Tried full shutdown on Xbox, tried deleting and reinstalling the Vudu app. The movie itself is unwatchable in UHD even in a dark room. Yet if I switch to HDX it plays fine. Please Vudu on One, you're my only hope.

Justice League and Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle are the same way. The 4K discs look fine for those movies on the X1X.

Which TV are you using? We'll give it a shot to see if we're able to reproduce it.

We are having the exact same trouble with playing movies in UHD on the Xbox One, dark playback and the entire Xbox One UI is dark. When we change the setting to HDX everything lightens up.We have a Samsung 4k UHD TV.

If the UI is dark that means it's not content-specific. Is this when you are playing "HDR10" titles? I'd try tuning the setting on your TV in that case - many TVs have separate settings saved for HDR vs SDR modes. The Samsung may need the brightness/contrast/backlight/etc turned up when you are playing HDR.

It's not the tv. It's not the content. When I first posted I didn't realize it was because of the Xbox Dashboard update that I was previewing. When I opted out of the Dashboard preview VUDU's 4K content was watchable again. Now that preview has become the stable build for April's Dashboard Update and the 4k streams in VUDU are unwatchable again. I have never had this problem with Netflix and its 4k content. Nor have I had this problem with games in 4k. I have a Samsung 4k tv. The answer posted stating "you may have to adjust your tv settings" is unacceptable. It is not the content. It is not the tv. It is the VUDU app or the Dashboard Update. I have checked all of my UHD content on VUDU and it is all doing the same thing. Maybe the app is displaying the content with the BLACK level set too light and the tv is attempting to compensate that. The issue still lies with the app or the Dashboard. I shouldn't have to readjust the settings for the one app that is having the problem. I watched "Interstellar" in 1080p last night and it was fine. When I tried to watch "It (2017)" in UHD it was too dark, yet in HDX it was fine. Just now I loaded up the VUDU app installed on my tv and it looked fine. I could not discern a difference in lightness between UHD and HDX.

I am using this Samsung tv:

It has the most recent software update.

So you are saying all Vudu UHD content is too dark on the Xbox One but looks ok on your 4K Samsung TV? That would definitely imply there is a specific issue with the Xbox One settings and/or system software. The app code and content is virtually the same on the Xbox One and Samsung TVs.

We will investigate and bring it up with Microsoft, thanks for the info.

I'm having the exact same problem. I own a Samsung TV, an Xbox One X, and a Samsung UHD blu-ray player. When I use Vudu on the blu-ray player, UHD movies look fine; however, on the Xbox One X they are so dark they are unwatchable. This issue started about a week ago.
One other thing, I noticed that when I start a movie, the black levels are correct. Then after a millisecond they become to dark to watch.

I am also having this issue with a Samsung MU7000. It started right after the latest update to the Xbox one x dashboard. Playing the same titles through Vudu on the tv app in 4k look fine, but when I use the Xbox app they are unwatchable.

Experiment with the settings of your TV. There should be a setting to automatically adjust the contrast. On my Sony TV it is called advanced contrast enhancer. With HDR, i have it set to high otherwise the picture is too dark. Also try adjusting the color up ten points with HDR.

Confirmed this is an Xbox One OS issue - Microsoft has already fixed it so will be in the next update.

                        Hello All,

If you'd like to try out the fix on your Xbox, you can go to Store, download "Xbox Insider Hub" and select "Join an Xbox Insider ring" option
