    Roku VUDU App constantly buffering

So I own a Roku 3 and I use the VUDU app to watch movies. I've watch HDX quality movies normally. Sometimes I may have a 1-2 quickly instances of buffering while watching a movie, but other times (like now) I cannot get the movie to play for more than a few seconds before it buffers again. Additionally, it doesn't matter which quality of movie it is (HDX, HD, or SD) as it constantly buffers. None of my other video streaming apps give me this sort of problem. I watch HS movies on Amazon Prime with no buffering. I use an Ethernet connection rather than a wireless one because I thought it would be more reliable, but I keep having this problem. I've updated my Roku and the connection to my Roku with no change. I really don't understand what the problem could be other than the VUDU app is broken somehow. If someone has an alternative suggestion, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is much you can do. My parents have two Roku boxes, and the Vudu app almost refuses to play movies. I would recommend what I did for them: download the Flixster app. It lets you access your UV library and we have had much better luck with it playing movies without buffering.

I suggest contacting VUDU support about this issue. I use Roku 3s as my only method of watching VUDU now, and I can't remember the last time we saw any buffering or dropping down to HD or SD, and we watch at least 1-2 movies a week on VUDU. There could be a lot of reasons for just VUDU having bandwidth issues, and they can help figure out where the problem might actually lie.

Re: Roku VUDU App constantly buffering

There are a bunch of threads on the same issue. I had the same problem tonight so I searched. The consensus is that this is a problem with the way Vudu buffers its video files and how that interacts with Roku's cached memory. Basically, your Roku is overwhelmed and can't handle the streaming. This seems to be a continuing problem specific to Vudu and Roku. Amazon, Netflix, etc. do not have the same issues on Roku. Since the earliest thread on this subject is from 2013, and the problem effects multiple Roku models, it seems that Vudu has no intention to try and resolve the problem.

The solution is a hard reset of your Roku. Unplug it, wait 10-30 seconds, plug it back in. This should clear the Roku's cached memory and your videos should now play. Be warned, however, the problem is likely to arise again and you'll have to fix it again.

We have been working with Roku for a long time on this, but they have not been able to find the root cause yet. It's an issue with the Roku drivers, as it persists even after quitting and restarting the VUDU app (ie. only a reboot resolves it).

Last week I had the same problem repeatly. Amazon, Netflix, Hulu all fine. Switched from wifi to hard wired, including all routers. Switched to HD, then SD. Nothing made any difference.

Hard reset fixed everything. Whenever I have problems with Vudu on Roku this is always the only fix.

Annoying, especially mid movie with people over. But it works.

How many people have no memory card installed in their Roku and are relying solely on the internal memory?

I tried for a while but eventually installed one larger higher spec one. It made no difference.

Memory card only seems to make any difference when you loads of channels instead and internal memory is maxed out.

I had no idea that the Rokus even had a micro SD slot, but from what I just found, the card is only used for storing channel data, not for video processing or running apps.

This is true and I knew it going in.

My thought was either the extra memory would offload some of the main unit resources and / or my applications would run better off the higher quality card instead of the cheaper main unit memory. Neither has proven true. But then I only have about 30 channels and really only use 4-5.

So, how do I do a hard reset of Roku 3? I can't find the answer on Roku site without paying $9.99.

                        1. unplug power
                        2. Wait customary period
                        3. plug power back in
                        4. Done

I had this exact problem on my ROKU 4 a couple months ago. As others have stated, unplug, wait 30 seconds, plug back in. It resolves the issue. I have not had the problem occur again.
