Chromecast with Google TV: 5.1 audio when casting, but not from the internal app?

I know there is a technical explanation for this, but at present it doesn't theoretically make sense to me. I hope someone is able to enlighten me. Here's the deal.

I have the new Google Chromecast with Google TV. It's connected to an AVR that decodes all currently available Dolby Audio formats, with a 7.1-channel sound system attached. The display is HDMI 1.4 / 1080p.

When I play a title at the HDX tier with an E-AC-3 5.1-channel audio track using the internal VUDU app on the CCwGTV, the audio is downmixed to 2.0-channel. However, when I cast the same title to the CCwGTV, the audio is 5.1 (or Dolby Atmos when available - such as on the Dolby Atmos demo pack).

It's very weird to me that 5.1 and Atmos audio can work beautifully through the casting path, but not the internal path. It forces me to jump through extra hoops to get best audio format. I just want to pick up the CCwGTV remote and play a title from the internal app instead of dragging out my tablet to cast it.

That's basically the entire reason I got the CCwGTV to replace my otherwise stellar Chromecast Ultra.

If it sounds like I'm unfairly singling out VUDU, the same thing occurs with other apps on the CCwGTV. This is not a unique VUDU problem. HBO Max is another example - 2.0 audio via internal app, 5.1 audio when casting. It's not even a unique CCwGTV problem. The same thing happens with HBO Max (but thankfully not VUDU) on the NVIDIA Shield TV.

I've configured and used a lot of different streaming players over the years (going all the way back to the first Netflix app on PS3), and this is the strangest problem I can remember!

If anyone understands from the coding level how something like this happens, I'd love a brief explanation!
