    Vudu vs. Blockbuster vs. Netflix

As a new owner of equipment that generously came with a free rental from Vudu, I decided to give it a try.

First, the HDX streaming over a 35Mb line was awful with regular buffering and suggesting reducing quality.

But the real question I have for everyone is, what is the value of Vudu?
    - I have a Blockbuster 1 block away where I can rent Blu-Ray for $5/week. Netflix Blu-Rays can be kept as long as you want. I don't understand why a service like this limits the rental to 24 hours.

Now I know the Vudu answer, it's because they are competing with VOD services through cable systems and telcos. Even Verizon FiOS VOD is $4 for 24 hours for most items and if you need an extension you just call and they will extend it for 12 hours for you.

So my questions comes down to this:
    - Why is Vudu worth the extra money?
    - Will Vudu ever do something to not just compete with VOD, but actually offer better pricing? If you rent HDX for $2 each, it's much easier as a consumer to stomach the price and therefore you'll end up with a much higher adoption rate and many more rentals per user, earning you substantially more money.

    waffull,

This sounds like a problem with your local internet connection. I stream HDX instantly with only a 10 Mbps connection. If you were to compare the quality of VUDU HDX to a Blu-Ray disk, I doubt you could find any difference.

With Vudu you don't have to drive to the store, you don't have to load a disk and everything is instant. Not only can you rent videos from VUDU you can also purchase videos, many of them between $5-$10.

Of course its worth the money, its the best streaming service there is. Back when I had crappy internet I was able to watch crystal clear SD on my 1.5 mbps DSL connection, were as netflix was all blurry and the sound was crap.

Not everyone has a blockbuster 1 block away.

Vudu has excellent pricing, and its built into many Blu-Ray's and HDTV's... Things like Luxury come with a little extra cost

VUDU wins, the ONLY downside is their support (lack of). They haven't helped me with my issue for about 9 months.

Re: Vudu vs. Blockbuster vs. Netflix

Great topic. I am trying to figure out the same.

I have used Netflix for more than 10 years, but with a new HD TV, and a new LG BD 590 blu ray player / Hard Disk, I was hoping I could download HD content to the hard disk and watch over several nights. Admitedly, not typical, but I usually take close to a week to watch a whole movie.

I thought I would be able to "save" a movie to the Hard Disk , in HD, for a week for a $1.99 fee which seemed reasonable. It appears, from reading on this site, that I can't rent the movie, but must "buy" it if I want to save it for a week. Even the really old movies - I mean more than 20 years old, cost $9.99 or more to "buy" them, and I don't even get a DVD I can keep.

I can't save the Netflix content, but I can start, stop, and re-start the streaming at will, and without additional fees. I don't care about the newest releases, but would like to watch my old favorites in HD. It looks like VuDu is not a good fit for me. Am I missing something?

It's great that you have had Netflix for so long......IMO, VUDU is a PREMIUM service for rentals and electronic sell-through...It is geared for people who like great video and audio from a streaming service that is only bested by Blu-Ray, you won't get that at a Netflix price........I buy films a lot of the time on the service, have only slowed down lately because the number major studios that provide their films for purchase in HDX has not increased......VUDU does run sales from time to time, one just ended, it was called "Steals for Under $5".......Also, they had the 99-Cent Year-End Special.....

VUDU is not for everyone, but many people here enjoy the superior experience it provides and feel the price is worth it, I do......Instead of writing the service off, stick around for a while and see what happens with rental sales, etc, with CES on the horizon, who knows what will happen?? I've been with the service since it was a start-up and have not been disappointed enough to give them up........
