    VUDU a waste of Time?

    VUDU seems to dodge the question about the "download purchases" part of the service. As near as I can tell the best you can do is get a SD copy. I don't want to have to stream the HDX version of a movie every time I want to watch it. Even iTunes gives you a HD version. Considering that the price is the same it looks like just purchasing the disk is a better option for getting HDX quality.

    You can download your HDX purchases in HDX, I've done so myself with most of my HDX movie purchases. However, VuduToGo is limited to SD for some reason. I'd say it was because of the studios, but my iTunes digital copies of the LoTR trilogy are in at least HD quality (about 3-4 gigs each).

      @MaxH
      On what device?

      Pretty sure PC downloads and streaming are both limited to SD, while Playstation 3 allows full HDX downloads, as should the upcoming Samsung Blu-Ray players with hard drives. Still beats Flixster, which only provides SD content, for now.

        I do my home watching on the original Vudu STBs, the BX100 and BX1000. As I said, downloads with VuduToGo (the only way to download with a desktop or laptop) are limited to SD, just as PC/Mac viewing is limited. But I just use downloads for watching on my laptop while traveling, so I don't mind the limitation. I keep the STBs' drives full because, why not? One day we may have power but no internet, and then we'll be able to watch our Vudu purchases. Not using the drive space on the STBs won't do anything for me.

          I was getting really excited about that comment.

            Gee Max, you are still using the ol' BX'es eh? I just got tired of the buffering issues with it and replaced it with the WDTV Live Hub and haven't looked back......I have about 130 movies on it's 1TB drive with room for 7 more, all HDX....It accesses my media server, is versatile as heck....and has other services too.....The bad part is right now, I can't watch my downloaded films offline, but once Ultraviolet goes to the next step with CFF, that may change....

              I got a Popcorn Hour A-200 off eBay to try it out, but the WD Live Hub looks like a better solution. I'd really like to rip all my discs to my NAS and not have to worry about the actual discs any longer. How is it at identifying and labeling files?

                It's ok, the community is always making new themes, moviesheets, etc. to cutomize the look, as the stock UI is ok, but the themers do a good job.....When I backup to my NAS, I rip the movie to MKV, and upload it to the NAS in this format: i.e. Inception.mkv or Jurrasic.Park.mkv and the WD can download the movie info.....In my experience, it has worked very well....

                  So, one more thing...if you have a NAS device, why'd you get the WD TV Live Hub instead of just the WD TV Live, without the HDD?

                    I believe VUDU will only let you download a movie with a built in hard drive.

                      So it seems their is no clear answer to the HDX download question. I access Vudu through my sharpTV. No one can seem to clearly state if and how to download the HDX version unless it is on one of the VUDU boxes? Most frustrating is that I can't even get an answer out of the VUDU tech support either.

                        You can download an SD stream to a PC or Mac, or up to HDX to some devices with HDDs like the PS3, WD Live Hub, or VUDU Box.

                          Most people have definitions of "download" and "stream" that are not mutually compatible, though. I think we're talking about different things.

                            Good question....I wanted the extra storage on the Hub for my VUDU downloads.....I cannot store those on my NAS.....Like I said, I'm hoping when UV's CFF is deployed, I can go all-digital, and move my owned VUDU purchases to the NAS....One unknown is if the WD will qualify as a UV device.....I would think so since it already is able to download UV content...

                              At least on Mac now, with the new version of VUDU To Go, I am presented with HD and HDX download options as well:
