    Screen darkens...

I have an LG 55LM7600 and I watch vudu movies in hdx. When I start the movie, my tv screen darkens for some reason. When I stop the movie and go back out to the browsing screen, all is normal again. It only darkens to the point where it seems like you've put on sunglasses; nothing else changes like color, clarity or anything else. It's very annoying and I won't rent again until I can resolve this. I did my own calibration with the help of settings suggestions I found online. Watching cable tv and movies in my Blu-ray player are just fine and are absolutely gorgeous. It's just this issue on vudu.

    Hello Max,

Can you provide me some more information so that I can try to reproduce this in the test lab.

    Please tell me the following
    - Movie title
    - Does this happen with every content you try to play in VUDU
    - Can you tell me the what your Energy Saving setting under Picture settings is
    - Can you tell me the settings listed under Picture --> Picture Options
    - Can you tell me the settings listed under Picture --> Advance Control

    Thanks,
    Tam

      Re: Screen darkens...

I failed to realize that when I watch a vudu movie, I'm watching via my wifi internet connection that is displayed on the t.v.'s "T.V." input.... which I had not calibrated.... and was showing me the vudu movies through the LG factory settings. A hearty "DUH" is in order for me as I had only calibrated the 4 hdmi inputs to my liking.

My apologies for the false alarm and I have resolved my own issue... but it was only after your reply asking for the detailed info did I realize what the problem was. So thank you so much for taking the time to try to help.

          Re: Screen darkens...

My self-solution wasn't the solution at all... the problem still exists. Even though I thought the fix was calibrating the "t.v." setting, I didn't have time to verify it by actually watching a movie on VUDU until last Sunday the 18th. I watched "Brave" and, again, watched in frustration. The next day, I got LG on the phone and we also verified that this issue also occurs on YouTube; the screen darkens only when the video starts playing and goes back to normal after stopping it and going back out to the menu. I also verified that it happens on Netflix... I started the movie "Thor" and it was even more obvious. Long story short, we've confirmed that my t.v. has the latest software update and an LG engineer said they saw the same thing happening when they tested my claim... although this was being relayed back to me through the operator that I was speaking with who was putting me on hold while he said he was investigating with an engineer; I never talked to an engineer. I was told that the engineer concluded that the problem must be with the apps themselves... ya know, like you nice folks at VUDU, Netflix and YouTube. I'm finding this hard to believe because I've been searching for any mention of this problem happening to anyone else and I haven't found anything yet. LG told me they'd be willing to start servicing my t.v. if that was the route I want to pursue so it appears that they will move forward as far as I push them. I just don't like that they had no other definitive info for me other than "it must be the apps themselves".

My request of you at VUDU now is to simply give this issue your own test on this t.v. You should see that the problem happens regardless of calibration settings but just so you know, I'm using Expert 1 with the same calibration settings on ALL inputs - the 4 HDMI and the T.V. inputs. Energy saving and Local dimming is OFF on all of them. I use the medium size arrow cursor on my Magic remote and, when you click to start the movie, slowly move the remote back and forth to keep the cursor on the screen and that will be the most noticeable way to see the dimming issue. I've also watched "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" and "A Cat in Paris".

Thank you, again, for any assistance you can provide.

            Re: Screen darkens...

I turned on my Smart Blu-ray player last night to watch a movie and a prompt to give it a software update was waiting for me. I started the process and while I was waiting, I realized that VUDU movies through the Blu-ray player should be able to bypass the dimming issues I'm having with the t.v.

I gave it a shot and, as I'd hoped, VUDU is as glorious as it should've been from the start. I purchased "Hugo" and it was presented on-screen perfectly. This clearly proves the dimming issue is LG's alone so investigating it on your end is completely unnecessary and should be done purely for your own amusement if you find yourself with nothing better to do.

            Thanks again for your time.
