I am a Nook HD+ owner and I own unsupported movies

I have a Nook HD+ and to my understanding I would be able to watch, own, or rent movies that are supported by vudu ultraviolet. Such is not the case and I'm upset. I have taken my device to the store (Barnes & Noble) and have been told to be patient but when I log into the website I don't even see my device listed under supported devices. I have a few movies connected with flixster on my device but can only open one. When I tap the movies that won't play the message that comes up says "This ultraviolet video is not currently supported. Please go to www.uvvu.com to view services that offer playback." UUGGHH! I've already linked my ultraviolet and fixster accounts to my nook. Help, Please and thanks!

Re: I am a Nook HD+ owner and I own unsupported movies

I know this is an old post, but I just got a Nook HD -- in part because of its UltraViolet support -- and have seen this issue firsthand with my UV library (a large part of which came from Vudu); I'm answering it mainly for other Nook HD/HD+ users who find this via search as I did.

This issue is between B&N and the studios and has nothing at all to do with UV, much less Vudu or Flixster. B&N's Nook Video store is a separate UV retailer; like Vudu & Flixster, it must obtain streaming licenses from the studios for each video in its store, whether first obtained there or licensed via UV from another retailer (like Vudu or Flixster). B&N now even has Nook Video apps for non-Nook devices to compete with Vudu and the like.

Titles that show in your Nook HD/HD+ library as "unsupported" are in your UV library, but are *NOT* offered by B&N in Nook Video. The message you see is basically the minimum required of retailers to comply with their own UV licenses: If there is a title in your UV library that the *retailer* (B&N, *not* Vudu or Flixster) can't provide you, it must direct you to a retailer that can -- or at the very least to the UV site itself where you can find one. (You can remove them from your Nook library, but I don't know how permanent that is so I haven't tried that yet.)

The workaround for this is to install the Android app of a UV retailer that *does* offer the title, then play it from that app instead. (That includes UV apps in the Nook appstore, presently just Vudu & Flixster; but IMO it's better to get those from Google Play.) AFAIK virtually all UV-supported titles are available from Vudu (haven't found one yet that isn't), so the Vudu app for Android 4.x devices (including Nook HD/HD+) alone should be enough to access all "unsupported" UV titles, as well as all your non-UV Vudu titles (Disney, MGM, Lionsgate), in SD. However, you will need the Android apps of other UV retailers, such as Flixster, to play non-UV titles from those stores, or UV titles in HD (Vudu's Android app currently plays HD & HDX titles in SD).

Things *may* be easier once UV rolls out its Common File Format, which in theory *should* allow you to download a title from one retailer and play it on any UV app, including the one built into the Nook HD/HD+; licenses for CFF files are supposed to come from UV directly. However, that won't be known for certain till CFF rolls out, currently scheduled sometime in 2014.
