Here, Fandango at Home customers may post information, questions, ideas, etc. on the subject of Fandango at Home and Fandango at Home -related issues (home theater, entertainment, etc).     Audio prob with Roku 3 App

    It may be that audio content isn't playing back properly in the VUDU app on Roku. I've done some basic troubleshooting and posted to Roku forums here, which may reveal further info from other users.

    Some movies I own via Ultraviolet/VUDU will not playback surround sound in the Roku 3. If I switch the Roku device to stereo mode the audio plays, when in surround sound mode then no audio.

    Example movies in question. LOTR - Fellowship of the Ring extended version, does have surround sound audio. LOTR - Two Towers extended version, does NOT have surrounds sound audio via Roku.

    I have the VUDU app on my Samsung HT system and the surround sound audio on the same movies does indeed work via this app and this platform.

    It seems to me that this suggests the problem is with the VUDU app specifically for the Roku device. I'm happy to watch the movies via the Samsung app temporarily however the Roku 3 is newer and has a snappier interface so I ultimately would prefer using that device.

    I will be happy to do further troubleshooting or post this information in a differnt place if suggested.

    Does your receiver (or whatever is decoding the audio) support Dolby Digital Plus? My guess is no - I see that Fellowship extended is DD and Two Towers extended is DD+. That's probably it.

    That's why the stereo option exists on the Roku, actually - VUDU (and Netflix) have a lot of DD+ content (most of VUDU's actually - I'm not even sure why Fellowship is only DD/AC3). Roku doesn't support Dolby Digital decoding so "surround" just means "pass it as is over HDMI".

      Yes my Samsung Home Theatre System supports Dolby Digital Plus. I did figure out that was the diff between Fellowship of the Ring and Two Towers. And I did watch Two Towers via the VUDU app on the Samsung, it played the Dolby Digital Plus audio just fine. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. The Roku is plugged direct into the Samsung via HDMI so it should also play the Dolby Digital Plus.

        I have found that when I get no audio playing a VUDU movie using my Roku XS - I can switch to my Samsung Blu-ray player and get sound playing the same VUDU movie. This points to the problem being with the VUDU AP for Roku.

          Set the Roku to STEREO under settings to get the audio. This is a limitation of the Roku, not the Vudu app. Read Jake's explanation above.
