    Prevent Downloading to Devices

Is there a way to keep someone (e.g. a linked account user) from downloading a movie to a device?

In other words, I created a UltraViolet account and added my wife and children as members to my account. From my Vudu account, I linked to my UV account and to the individual family members' UV account. I don't care if the kids watch/stream the movies, but I don't want them downloading them since there's a limit to how many devices the movie can be downloaded to. I can see my kids downloading to their friends devices and using up all the downloads. So, I'm looking for a way to use technology to prevent this from happening.

    Any ideas?

The download limit isn't in effect yet.

Maybe not, but a solution is still needed.

I am not sure how this limitation will be implemented and enforced...we may need a single solution provided by the UltraViolet site or we may need multiple solutions from all providers. Take for example parental controls. Every provider's controls work a little bit different and you have to set them up on each site. If each service implements their on controls to limit the number of downloads to say 2 times, well I assume that if you download from Vudu that their system would have to notify UV, Flixster, and all the other services that you downloaded a movie so they all know...otherwise you would be able to download the movie twice from each provider, and with the list of UV services growing you might end up being able to download the movie 18 or 20 times. But you would have to setup controls to restrict downloaded on on services being used.

It would be much easier if parental controls were defined somewhere on the UV website and all UV retailers pulled our settings from there so we only had to set them up once.

Also, I assume that when you download you can copy from one device to another. If not, then there probably shouldn't be a limitation on how many times we can download our movies.

That's an interesting theory. My theory is that since you can download and copy it to other devices, even hard drives, and torrent services, that you will never have to worry about the download limit. I plan to save all my movies to a portable hard drive for safe keeping.

That would make more sense, no download limit. But because they try to limit the number of devices you can link to your account, I suspect that they will try to limit the number of downloads. If they do, I would think that the limitations would also be time sensitive...something like 2 downloads every 2 to 4 years or something like that. But I don't feel that a limitation to downloads is necessary and I feel that the maximum number of devices needs to be at least doubled.

Although I don't need it, another good option would be the ability to block your kids from downloading or streaming movies on the account based on rating.

We have to see how this will be handled. The download limit, as I understand it, is a UV minimum, which could imply the ability for providers to continue allowing more downloads. Also, you should be able to legally grab a movie for which you reached the d/l limit from bittorrent or similar.

My best solution, at present, would be to remove the apps with d/l capability and rely on the website for playback. I guess that won't stop modern 'techie' kiddos from redownloading the apps, so I'd just make sure they understand to side-load content off the home-media server. I'd even set up the old ftp server so they can access them from anywhere on almost any device with the right app.

All you have to do is create a child account on your UV account and limit it with the parental blocking from there. Then link their Vudu account to their child UV account and then he/she can only see and download movies that you allow. You can even block certain PG-13 movies that has profanity or excessive violence so they will not show even if you allow PG-13.

Eg. It will allow Star Trek & Spiderman PG-13 but not X-Men PG-13.

I have 130+ movies in UV but my son only sees about 30 of them that are PG-13 or lower.
