    Playing Vudu movies in HDX on Google Chrome jerkiness problem/fix

    I wanted to share my experience and hope that it helps some people as well as signals Vudu that they need to get this remedied.

    For many months I had tried to play Vudu's HDX movies on my computer using Google Chrome, but always experienced occasional jerkiness, especially on fast moving scenes such as those in the movie "Man of Steel." My computer specs are high, and my net speed is super high, so that wasn't my problem. At first I doubted that, but considering I could always get Vudu HDX movies to play flawlessly on Internet Explorer, I knew it wasn't a computer issue.

    Using the process of elimination, I tried EVERYTHING. In Google Chrome's settings I disabled Phishing/Malware protection, and after typing in chrome://plugins in the web link field I disabled EVERY plug-in except for Adobe's flash player.

    The problem persisted, although it didn't seem as bad. It was still there, but it helped a tiny bit....just barely.

    Then I got an idea. In the chrome://plugins section I saw that the Adobe Flash Player on Google Chrome was split into two different elements. One was the PPAPI (out of process) part (pepflashplayer.dll) and the other was the NPAPI one. (NPSWF32_12_0_0_70.dll).

    So, I disabled the pepflashplayer.dll BUT left the NPSWF active. Then I restarted Chrome and tried to play Man of Steel and voila, it worked without any problems whatsoever, even after I enabled all of the other plugins I had previously disabled.

    I don't know if disabling the pepflashplayer part of the Adobe Flashplayer will mess up flash on any other web sites, but on Vudu, it seemed to completely remedy a problem with video jerkiness that I had been having for, literally, months.

    I also posted this on the Adobe website, and this is the information that I received...

    "The PPAPI plug-in is Google's proprietary "PepperFlash" plug-in.
    Google is engaged in a push to move the web to PPAPI, or so I've read. They have written PPAPI compatible code into YouTube to make it easier for their own plug-in to work there. It's all part of their plan to get everyone to switch to their browser.
    Most of the rest of the Internet, hasn't done this yet, which is why disabling PepperFlash works.

    The other factor is the move to HTML5 which requires NO plug-in. Even PepperFlash has no effect on purely HTML5 video. YouTube has made the conversion to HTML5, which leaves the PPAPI move on their part unexplained, but that's what I've seen."

    Back to me:

    So, in my opinion, Vudu either needs to rewrite their code to make it more PPAPI friendly, or they need to switch to an all HTML5 format. Just an opinion...
