4k UHD streams skip / stutter / stall / errors only with Vudu

Long time Vudu user for years in HDX no problem. Finally bit the bullet and got a very nice 4k OLED Smart TV and was excited about the prospect of finally being able to watch 4k UHD on Vudu.

Amazon Prime 4K , and other 4K streams (YouTube, the few available 4K on Netflix, etc..) all work perfectly.

But Vudu 4k UHD doesn't. Movie will start out almost fine, just a minor 1-second drop / skip in the audio here & there, but after 5 minutes it gets worse, and then after another 5 to 10 minutes its stops with ERROR "Playback Error. Sorry, the video player has stopped working. Please try again".

All my gear is modern and my network config is proper / stable. All firmware / apps are fully updated. TV and Router are both new within the past 4 months. Speedtest.net shows I'm over 100Mbps down / 6Mbps up. Router has amazing range, dual-band, and I've tried on both 2.4GHz and 5Ghz bands. All other devices / apps in the house are fast and work perfect.

I've tried everything as far as troubleshooting goes.

So I called Vudu support on phone. Agent was nice. But, no answers. Had me do speedtest.vudu.com , good fast connection. Tried to blame my TV - well, 4K streams perfect on all other apps, so that's a stretch. When I said Amazon Prime 4K streams perfect, Vudu agent said "well their system is different than ours". OK, I understand systems are different, but there's no denying that I've got a 100Mbps connection, 2018 OLED Smart TV with Dolby Digital / HDR+ / Dolby Atmos (though I don't use Atmos since I don't have ceiling speakers, just a nice 5.1 setup through a modern Yahama smart receiver - supports all those formats... Arc) , and no denying that the ONLY app that has any problem streaming 4K UHD is Vudu.

I'm so frustrated that I decided to register here on the forum and share / search for others who are encountering same thing. Found tons of users on Reddit with same exact issue - Vudu only problem - variety of brands of TV's / systems, all with very fast stable connections - all with one thing in common - 4k streaming is fine on all other apps but Vudu 4K UHD spits & sputters and craps-out on them as well.

Such a bummer. I know it's not the end of the world, but why is Vudu selling / renting 4K UHD when clearly they have a problem supporting it and/or problem with the app? The choice of 4K videos elsewhere is either stale or limited, while Vudu has more new 4K titles, which is the only reason I'm even bothering. If there were a better source of 4K streaming movies, I would simply ditch Vudu and use something else.

According to the Vudu Help pages, my equipment and speeds all meet and/or surpass their requirements for 4K UHD streaming.

Rented a second movie last night just in case the issue was with the first particular movie I tried. Same problem. Wasn't going to keep renting more and basically pay to be a Vudu Beta Tester.

    Can anyone relate?

I'm attaching my Vudu speedtest results, plus my direct speedtest.net results, plus photo of the error on my screen every 10 minutes when trying to watch 4k UHD on Vudu.

OK... forum says I'm not unauthorized to post attachments, so until I'm allowed and can prove it, here's the results

    http://speedtest.vudu.com/ - 87Mbps

    https://www.speedtest.net/ - 108Mbps

Vudu App on new 4k OLED Smart TV - "Playback Error. Sorry, the video player has stopped working. Please try again"

I'm located in New York, USA, using Spectrum (Time Warner) broadband 100Mbps down / 10Mbps up plan.

What is the specific model of your TV?

OLED - LG - OLED65B6P - I have one as well and as of today, it's having problems getting any content to stream (I have a 1G connection - fiber optic - I won't bother posting connectivity logs as I haven't been disconnected in 2? years and my bandwidth never drops below 800mbps down. Why can't there be a stable app created for LG that doesn't keep getting borked? This happens every time there is an update to the app. Sometimes it lasts for weeks while Vudu fixes the "fix" they release.

I *never* have these issues when I stream from any other app on the TV as the original poster said. I've got a Vudu library I've spent thousands and thousands of dollars on and to have this happen as often as it does makes me quite unhappy and dissatisfied with the service.

My first post on this site, so I hope it goes well. I have an LG OLED77C8PUA, which will be close enough I think. I never would have thought this would do it, but it did. I hope it helps you as well. Happy holidays.

Good news though, I've come up with a solution to the problems outlined in my original post!

I got half the solution from searching the web and added a couple my own steps.

THIS IS WHAT WORKED FOR ME:

Step 1. - On the LG TV itself, navigate to Settings > General > Location and disable the "auto detect" and change Location to a different country. (The TV will automatically restart).

Step 2. - After the TV reboots, go back to Settings > General > Location and set it back to your correct country, but leave the auto-detect DISABLED. (The TV will restart again).

Step 3 - On the LG Remote / TV , go to "HOME" and it will display a list of apps. Scroll to the end and choose Edit Apps, and DELETE the Vudu app. This will delete cached info of course, which is what we want to do.

          Step 4. - Re-install the Vudu app and sign-in.

Vudu will now stream 4k UHD video on the LG OLED Smart TV without sound drops / stuttering / glitching - no more errors.

          Problem solved for me.

I hope this information can help someone else.

I contacted LG support since I had a case open with them, and provided the steps above to their support team and suggested maybe they pass them around so their team is all aware.

          Cheers everyone,

I am going to withdraw my earlier post. It worked only for a couple of days. Sigh.

I have this same problem with my LG OLED 65C8. My mother who lives with us also has an LG UHD TV but it is the previous model, non-led. She is streaming thru my wifi network and my OLED tv is connected via ethernet. Vudu only give me the playback error when I'm streaming UHD movies. I use the first 2 steps in SomeDave's December post to correct them problem and then I'm able to watch the UHD movie in vudu but I have to do this everytime I encounter the error, which is every time I watch a UHD movie on vudu.

When I encounter the vudu playback error, here is what I do:
              1. Go to LG general-》location settings. Change to Canada. TV restarts.
2 Go to LG general-》location settings. Change to United States. TV restarts.
              3. Go to vudu app on TV, resume playback of movie and now it will play until the movies finished without any playback errors.
              This is so frustrating
