    VUDU plays movie MUCH darker

    Hello,

I recently decided to switch from google play movies to VUDU. Google play is terrible at HD reliability, or even telling you what you're getting. I tested VUDU with the current movies i have by signing up for the disney anywhere service. VUDU is great!! HDX is amazing, and even if it can't play it due to device or connection issues, it will clearly indicate that.

But I noticed something very strange with one movie. I have not tested this with other movies yet. With the movie "Thor" from 2011, when played on HDX, it is REALLY REALLY dark. The beginning of the movie is at night in the desert, so it would be dark anyway, but on VUDU its so dark I can't really see anything. I recently got a new tv, and finally got google play thru youtube to reliably play my movies at 1080p, and while I was doing tests on my tv, I noticed the google play/youtube HD version of "Thor" showed WAY brighter than on VUDU. Not so bright as if it was incorrect, but simply bright as the movie was intended to be displayed.

I plan to purchase many more movies on VUDU, but before I do, is this going to be an issue going forward? If movies are going to be ridiculously darker than normal, than I won't be buying anything on VUDU.

Can someone please help me with this?

    Thanks!!

Re: VUDU plays movie MUCH darker

Yeah there have been a few discussions here already on why Thor is so dark. Naturally Vudu said they'd look into it but that resulted in nothing. It is one of the very few movies that has a bad encoding here but plays fine elsewhere. It's why I still have the DMA app on my Roku so when I want to watch Thor I can play it there just fine. It's a pain yes but sadly we can only beg and plead so many times. Heck it took them five years to fix the aspect ratio of Enemy of the State and even longer for us to get multi channel audio on The Matrix series of movies. Heck Tombstone is still in Stereo. We ask and hope something ever gets done.

It's distressing that Thor was never corrected. I started watching it the other day, and it's still waaaay too dark. I did a compare and contrast by watching the same scene (the opening storm where Thor crashes to Earth) on Google Play and Amazon. There is simply no question about it, the Vudu version is entirely too dark.

When I brought it up previously, I was told that the current encode is fine. How Vudu can make that claim when it's clear to anyone with a set of eyeballs that it's not is beyond me.

Here is the (now closed) thread where I brought it up previously:

I think they mean the first Thor, since only the new one is UHD here, and this thread is from last year... lol
