What is vudu doing on my network?

The lights on my vudu attached bridge are constantly blinking ... what exactly is vudu doing? I know I'm not seeing new movies becoming available (at least to rent) I can't believe the database is constantly being updated. So is all this activity for the benefit of my fellow vudu users who want to watch "Werewolf Woman From the Deep on Planet Mars Meet the Marx Brothers"? It would be interesting to know what's going on so I can decide on whether I want to use my option to cut back on it's bandwidth usage...

First of all, as yours is a new box, there is content loading to it fairly often. There are still a lot of database updates going on and it takes days for it to happen. As well, the boxes are all in peer to peer networks and your may be helping to seed other boxes as well.

The Vudu will take up about 100 to 200 kbps of uplink usage at most. Downlink, I've seen it take up to about 2 Mbps in short bursts of a few minutes. Usually database updates run around 200 kbps. It's going on all the time almost right now as there are a lot of new boxes in the field and a lot of updates still going out.

As I have told you guys there are a lot of changes a foot...

If you cut back the usage using what we call the "Nice To Network" function of the box, you will cut your streaming rate in half as well. This will eliminate the "On Demand" viewing of the box.

Is the box causing problems on your network with the current data load? If not, why should it matter?

Maybe, Greg, the Vudu network genius can tell you some more. I'm not sure what can be said or not...

        I wonder sometimes as well!

Seems like this question is going to be a FAQ... I'll work with Gil to have it part the FAQ at http://supports.vudu.com/

We should probably have a sticky thread pointing there as well if we don't already.

Well, the Vudu box is hooked to your network and is always busy for the most part. First of all, it's in the process of downloading software and database updates. Second, it's working to serve shows in the P2P network.

Just because your LED's are flashing doesn't mean it's using a ton of bandwidth.

The router uses about 100 kbps uplink traffic with a maximum of around 200 kbps. Downloads happen around 300 kbps or so except for streaming.

It's doing what it is supposed to do!

If you go to advanced network settings and change from letting VUDU manage the bandwidth to limit bandwith the VUDU will limit the outbouond usage. But the disadvantage is that you will no longer be able to do instant viewing of movies.

Is there a reason why would you want to do that?

And no you can't shut it off. You can only slow it down like Ron said. The whole Vudu architecture works so well because of the boxes all sharing content with one another.

Are you on a pay per kilobyte internet service or something? There's nothing wrong with a device using the network. You shouldn't be having any of your other services or ability to do anything affected. Just because lights flash doesn't mean your network is going crazy. Vudu has done a pretty good job of making sure the box doesn't thrash your network.

                          Hello fijidaddy,

There is no such ability, as the service relies on it to deliver new content (movies, trailers, database updates, software, etc) to you, and helps provide instant access to every customer (including you of course ).

It is designed to be non-intrusive traffic (some people actually would prefer if we used more bandwidth as they are sometimes a little impatient when we release new software or databases ).

New boxes (i.e. that customers just plugged in) have missed a lot of content while they were sitting on shelves at the store (or in the warehouse), so new customers are going to see a lot of low-bandwidth traffic for long periods of time (how long depends on how long the box has been disconnected from the network), until the box catches up and the chatter then slows down.

Of course, VUDU often delivers content in preparation for new features (think about the recent TV feature), so heavy traffic usually indicates that new things are coming!

Nevertheless, if for any reason the box is taking too much of your bandwidth, there is a setting to tell it to reduce its usage (it'll basically cut it down in half), but unfortunately this has side effects such as not getting the latest stuff quickly, and not being able to watch movies instantly.

                          I hope this helps.

                          Cheers,

                          -- Greg

Yes - I was thinking about this. Could we have a new option in our advanced service setup - where we currently have the "reduced" or "normal bandwidht" settings - can we add "increased bandwidth" which would up the priority of Database/software updates?

We will put in a feature request and see what we can do about this. Hopefully, it is something easy to do and can be implemented soon.
