Re: What is vudu doing on my network?

I guess I'm curious on the differences between a Vudu "box" and my Mitsubishi TV which has Vudu access via a LAN connection. For all intents when the TV is on I see network activity and when the TV is off, the port is dead. So far on my 6 meg DSL circuit, performance has been great. The drop behind the TV goes into a 10/100 switch hub, with one drop to the TV and the other to a Slingbox. I do see some apps on Vudu, although I noticed that earlier this week the Facebook app no longer appears. No great issue since that specific app didn't seem to work anyway.

The main difference between the two services is download (VUDU STB) vs. streaming (VUDU-embedded devices). For the most part, all of the content and features are the same on both services. The streaming service allows our users to get instant HDX movies, if there connection is fast enough, where as the VUDU box would have to download the entire HDX film before you can begin playback. The flip side to that would be that you will always need an internet connection with the sustained required speeds to enjoy the VUDU streaming service - if you're internet connection drops, the movie will stop playing. Furthermore, if you don't have a fast enough connection for streaming HDX (at least 4.5 Mbps) than you will not be able to enjoy our 1080p HD content. However, it seems that you should not have an issue with the streaming service at 6.0 Mbps.

Biggest difference is that the STB uses Peer to Peer technology. It downloads content not just from a central server but from other boxes as well. And content on your box will be served to other users. All databases and catalogs of movies, poster art, etc are stored on your box as well.

On the embedded side, everything is streamed from a central server. It's downloaded only when needed. But nothing is really stored on the box - that's why there's a slight delay for artwork.

The "trickplay" modes are slightly different too. The streaming, embedded service has chaptering while the STB does not. The STB is easier to move around in though in short distances. It's easier to back up the STB box 5 or 10 seconds when watching a movie than it is to backup the streaming system. With the streaming system, you have to rebuffer after backing up, etc. However, on the STB, you can't fast forward past the point where your movie has downloaded. But on the streaming side, you can.

So there are some differences but content, etc. is all the same.
