ATTN Vudu, the problem is at your end!!

For more than a year I've been watching HD movies without any issues. Tonight a total collapse. Can't watch HD for more than 3 minutes before being asked to dial down to SD.

Given VUDU's excellent track record I figured my cable provider (Wideopenwest) was to blame. Gave them a call and according to the stats the tech can see remotely nothing was out of the ordinary. So I decided to perform a few tests to help zero in on the problem. First I ran Wideopenwest's speed test which confirmed I was getting close to the 15 Mbps subscription speed. Then I ran speed tests against various servers all over the internet (see DSL Reports). These tests confirmed my Wideopenwest result. Hmm, getting interesting. So now I run the speed test against the VUDU speed test server. It consistently reports speeds less than half of all other speed tests, less than 6 Mbps to be precise. 40% of the time it struggles to reach 4 Mbps. Not encouraging news, but I'm still keeping an open mind. I then try downloading DVD ISO images. No problem, speed consistent with Wideopenwest speed test. I then try streaming video from other sites. Again, no problem.

The evidence is pretty clear, there is a problem specific to VUDU. While it is possible that Wideopenwest might be throttling it seems unlikely because: 1. the effective speed is varying too much even dipping below acceptable HD levels at times, and 2. Why wait until now to start throttling? I've been a heavy user for over a year without any issues. The best explanation to fit all this is that there is something wrong with the HD stream being created at VUDU.

If there is a problem on VUDUs end it was not affecting me here last night. I still had no issue streaming multiple VUDU streams concurrently with all getting three HDX bars from my 43mbps internet connection.

I couldn't get through on the support phone lines at all. Quite a coincidence don't ya think?

Not sure what you mean by "buffering". I use the VUDU box, but I don't know what sort of storage innards it has.

Has VUDU received any other Wideopenwest cable user reports like mine where service was flawless for over a year and then suddenly imploded?

One thing I noticed after the recent firmware upgrade is that "download and watch later" seems to have no effect. When I select this option it immediately updates to "Watch Now" in the upper left corner. Not sure what VUDU's definition of "later" is, a millisecond? Anyway I have tried waiting several minutes but I have no definitive evidence that this has any positive effect.

Well I have, but haven't heard back from you.

Couple of other data points for the discussion. I ran a speedtest against the VUDU server from work and achieved 33 Mbps which seems to corroborate "aaron"s finding. But, when doing more speed tests at home I discovered that the tests for various servers located in California were yielding extremely poor scores (same as VUDU whose servers also appear to be located in California). It seems there's a network transport segment in/out of CA that throttles traffic. I'm hoping VUDU has servers in other parts of the US and that there is a way to tell my VUDU box to use one of those.

                Nbi,

You should be connecting to the Chicago area server. If you wouldn't mind running a trace route for me, we can confirm that.
