Using 3rd party wireless point of access?

Looking to buy a VUDU for my parents. They have an iMac and I believe it is hooked directly to the DSL modem (no router). So in order to use the VUDU wireless system I would need to buy a router (correct?) The iMac has built in g wireless and is working (I use my iPhone there). Can I just buy a wireless access point and hook the VUDU box and not have to use VUDU wireless (and buying a router)?

Most DSL modems have a built in router.

So is the answer no I must use only VUDU wireless. My parents live 220 miles from here and out in the boonies. Don't want to get there and find the DSL modem is not "most" (my cable modem only has 1 out that goes to my router) and only has one out and it goes to their iMac.

You could set up the iMac to share the wireless connection with the ethernet connection. That would work. But it's a bit of a hassle since if the Mac is not on, the Vudu would have no connection. They should get a router - it's more secure and will allow everything to function easily.

Not sure you following what I'm asking. The iMac is plugged directly into the DSL modem. iMacs come with built in wireless networking (all you do is cut it on). I would like to buy a wireless access point like this one then connect to their wireless network and plug the VUDU into it. Their computer is always on and security is not a problem (no need for even password since there is no one near).

If they keep the Mac on 24/7 it sounds like it will be fine. There's nothing particularly special about the Vudu ethernet port and LAN requirements, so as long as you can configure the WAP correctly to give the Vudu an IP, I think it will work.

Re: Using 3rd party wireless point of access?

That's a wireless range extender and won't work AFAIK for doing what you are asking which is to be used in what is called "client" mode. Those devices used to do that but newer models and firmware do not. The main purpose of that guy is to take a wireless signal and re-broadcast it to improve range.

Now, what i am talking about here is you can share one connection on your Mac with another connection. So you can effectively turn you Mac into a router. You go into System Preferences and click on Sharing. Then there's an item called "Internet sharing." You enable that and your Mac will then share it's ethernet connection (connected to the DSL modem) to any other interface you would like - in this case the wireless. So clients could connect to your Mac and share its internet connection.

As I stated, this will work but as I didn't state, you still need a way to get the Vudu to operate wirelessly. I was thinking you could get the Vudu wireless adapter and just use half of it, but in reality that won't work since that device will not work with other wireless equipment. So, here's what you really need to do:

1.) Get a router for your parents - can be wired or wireless. And this is more secure than them running the Mac's built-in firewall.

2.) Get the Vudu Wireless kit. The Vudu wireless kit will create it's own wireless connection. One side of the kit connects to the Vudu, the other side, into the router. It's all plug and play - no configuration.

This is what you really need to do.

If you can get them to install the router where your Vudu is located, you won't need the wireless kit.
