Setting up the Wireless Kit on a Wireless Network

Hi, I purchased vudu and the wireless kit (I hope it works for my situation). I live in a high rise condo and we have a have Wirless Connection available in the entire building. So, I don't have a router, modem, etc.... I just look for my wireless connection on my pc and laptop and it magically appears. I put my code security code (wep) in and away I go. I tried to connect my vudu via my laptop and it doesn't find the network when I run the test on my tv. Do I need to do anything special? Like I said - I don't have a cable modem or anything, just the wirless network in my building that is secured by the wep that is changed on a monthly basis. Any suggestions? My network test has excellent ratings when I ran the test before I purchased vudu. Thanks!!

Sorry to say I don't think the kit would work for your situation. It's just a glorfied extender to get your wired access to a place where you don't have a wire.

It seems like you need to get a wireless access point device that knows how to connect to your Wifi network.

I'm sure someone here can recommend such a device. I would if I could.

Re: Setting up the Wireless Kit on a Wireless Network

Actually Hodge, that isn't exactly accurate.

I'm not sure if your using XP or VISTA, but both come with the ability to act as a "router" or "proxy" server via "Internet Connection Sharing," which is a function of Windows XP and VISTA to allow multiple users to share one Internet connection through one computer. In theory one could use their own wireless connection to connect to the Internet then allow another device to use that connection, once connected...although not an ideal solution.

Now I do believe Hodge is right that once you connected to your wireless connection, that your won't be able to use the VUDU wireless bridge, although I've never tested this, and I doubt it would work. So for your vudu box to work your going to need a direct connection from your VUDU box to your PC via a switch. Just keep in mind that your BOX will only have access to the internet when your PC is connected to your wireless router, and that in itself presents some issues in regards to keeping your box updated. Also, you will need to configure your PC to run ICS, therefore my suggestion is to google "Internet Connection Sharing" and/or ICS sharing, etc for more information or setting up your particular OS for ICS.

My suggestion would be to see if you can get a wired solution into your home via your phone line (DSL) or your cable to your TV (Cable Modem) and if neither of those are available, the possibility of a Satellite Internet service or a wireless broadband provider, like Clearwire.

      Good Luck!

I don't know if this would work, but this is an example of what I was thinking about:

Bottom line is that the Vudu wireless kit is a proprietary link between the two end units. They are made to connect to each other and as Hodge stated, they are an extender.

Also, if you share wireless with others in your building, I would be careful about using the Vudu. You'll effectively be taking bandwidth away from them when the box is being used and active. You may cause problems to everyone else in your building. It is best to get your OWN internet connection for something like this.

Thanks for all the tips. We do have 2 t1's coming into our building - so I'm not worried about abusing use of resources and affecting my neighbors ability to use the internet. I will post my results for others that may be living in a wifi world...
