    Re: VUDU Network Down?

Hey guys... Been having the same issue here. Just went to the WGA54G, but it has not solved "VUDU network down" issues. Was using a bridged Linksys router previously, but got this issue, now even with the new game adapter connected, I am not able to connect.

This has been about 2 weeks of issues and downtime (have not posted about it because I have been traveling and thus unable to troubleshoot until today).

This is obviously not a "one off" or a WGA54G issue as I have now seen it with two different connections (router and game adapter).

Can you try a hardwired direct connection? I hardwired fails, you may have a Vudud . I have a friend who picked up the sling-link ethernet over power adapter for his Vudu, and it is working like a charm. You can even connect a small hub to this inside your entertainement center to support other devices (Xbox, Wii, etc.) that also need ethernet connection.

Also, could you please post your Client ID for the engineer to peek inside the covers?

Well, things have been working somewhat. The network has been up and down. The two movies we watched last night and this morning (rentals), stalled because the network lost a connection about halfway through the showing. Still had internet connection, but the network dropped.

          Re: VUDU Network Down?

I know Ron likes wireless but anytime I do anything with video I want hardwire, hardwire, hardwire. My only exception to this is my AppleTV but most of its video content is stored on its drive anyhow...

            Re: VUDU Network Down?

I am beginning to believe that I am going to have to go fully wireless. The issue is that the VUDU lives outside my office and my office is where I have to keep the hardwired connections. Eventually I see the need to run the wiring and get rid of the wireless adapters, but honestly it is not convenient. I either have to reconfigure my network location or run wires.

One of the ethernet-over-power adapters may be to your advantage.

I just got a couple of the original ones that SlingMedia sold on a surplus sale I found. I now have 4 of them. They are quite nice. Data rate is coming out about 5 Mb/sec but that is more than sufficient for the Vudu...

The new SlingLink Turbo ones are even faster - up to about 90 Mb/sec...

Gave up on the wireless router last night... completely unusable. Picked up a SlingLink 1 Turbo today, but despite my wireless and wired network consistently nailing down 7+ MB with every other device, I am not able to get instant downloads even with the SlingLink. Thought that now that I was hard wired, that I'd finally be able watch a movie with no pauses or interruptions... nope, not tonight.

Any suggestions to help with the optimization? I will be Vudu and internet deprived as I am headed out of town for vacation, but thinking that a call to my internet provider may help. Pretty disappointed at this point... wife is not too ecstatic with the purchase. Argh. I will keep working to get it "right," but how much longer to make this work?

                    Re: VUDU Network Down?

I just thought of something and maybe Greg can pitch in here a little bit too.

The Vudu tends to use a fairly large number of TCP/IP connections. There are two settings in routers that can cause issues.

The first is the maximum number of allowed TCP/IP connections - this should probably be increased from the default value.

The second is the timeout period for connections to close. This needs to be lowered from most default values.

Some routers allow you to adjust this and some don't. I use DD-WRT with my Buffalo and I think I originally had the maximum number of TCP/IP connections as something like 512. I maxed it out to 4096. Vudu doesn't use near that many and even 512 may be enough. More importantly, the defualt value for the connection timeout was 3600 seconds. I dropped it to 120 seconds.

So what happens is Vudu makes a TCP/IP connection to pull content from a peer. That connection is fairly short lived. The transfer stops and then a connection to another peer is started. But the first connection is still "open" as far as the router is concerned and therefore, your total number of open connections will start to grow rapidly. I had this happen to me and my router slowed to a crawl and became very unstable. I can't comment on what this did to instant movie delivery as back then I was not on a fast enough DSL connection to get instant delivery. But increasing the total connections and dropping the timeout time made things much, much better.

This might be what people are seeing happen on their networks and why instant streaming isn't working all the time on a good internet connection...

Have you reset the Bandwidth History? If not, the box may still think you have the "older" connection and not give instant access because of that. If you reset the BH, it'll forget everything about the past and relearn.

Yes. I have cleared the bandwidth history. Is there a way to look up the MAC address for the Vudu device or would that be specific to the SlingLink connection? If I had that, I may be able to edit the QoS in the Linksys firmware to allow higher priority to the Vudu bandwidth. May have to upgrade to DD-WRT (although last time I ran my network with that, I had major issues).

The MAC address should be on the outside of your Vudu's shipping box. It's also printed on the bottom of the Vudu itself.

Well, time to see if changes work. I basically put the highest priority on both SlingLink powerline adapters and edited the specific port connection on the router that is connected to the SlingLink to give it a high priority. I also shut off flow control. The intention is just to allow the Vudu box to run wild and allow it to have its way with the network traffic. If it works great. If not, then time to look at other options.
