    VUDU setup ???

so I umm... borrow my internet connection from my neighbor

I have a macbook that links to their network wirelessly, but now I got the VUDU as a gift and would like to use it... but I don;t think I can use it

any way I can make it work?

The Vudu needs a 24/7 internet connection to function properly, and it would probably have a bigger impact on your generous neighbors network than your laptop. I'd advise to discuss this with your neighbor first.

From a long term perspective, you would be better off with your own internet service being delivered inside the home.

Are you legally using the neighbor's connection? Most ISPs have a "restrict sharing" provision in customer agreements. Remember this can happen:

Wow. Someone gave you a nice gift!

Do the Vudu justice and get a good 3 Mb/sec or faster internet connection of your own!

All macs come with internet sharing via ethernet. Just go into system preferences, sharing, internet tab. Then share your airport connection via ethernet. You can throw that ethernet into a router or even into an airport express or anything really. Just a thought...

            Of course he could, but...

We don't know what his connection speed is between him and his neighbor. Could be slow if the distance is long. Also, sharing the internet connection results in splitting the speed by half. AFAIK, OS X just divides the total available speed between the Mac and whatever is being shared. So if your connection is 10 Mb/sec, then when shared 5 Mbps is allocated to each regardless of traffic.

And given he has an MBP, I assume it's portable for him and he takes it with him. The Vudu really needs to have a full time internet connection to stay in the best shape.

I'd try the sharing thing to see how you like the Vudu and if you like it, then it would prolly work best to get your own internet...

I strongly recommend you not do this. While an occasional "accidental" usage for browsing or email is one thing, having constant data transfer going over your neighbors connection is both very wrong and very illegal if you don't have your neighbors consent.

Actually, it may not be. You can't make that blanket statement. His neighbor may allow him to share his connection. While the ISP may not like that, I don't know if they have any legal control here over what I do with my LAN.

Secondly, his ISP may actually promote such usage. When I had Speakeasy, they had a program called Wi-Fi net share which basically allowed you to earn money from sharing your connection with your neighbors. Your neighbors paid only for their e-mail accounts and you got a certain amount off your monthly service fee.

                  Re: VUDU setup ???

You are right. I may have inferred to much. Please add "If you are doing this without your neighbors consent then" to the front of my statement. I do believe that the TOS for many ISPs prohibits you from letting others outside of your premises utilize your connection. I recall reading in either my Comcast one or my AT&T one that doing so would be considered theft of services and a violation of your TOS. I would bet that would be the case for most ISPs though (and I'm not saying all) since everyone who is using it without paying for it is lost revenue to them. It really isn't much different than a neighbor tapping into you cable TV line, either with or without your knowledge. From the cable company's perspective, that would clearly be theft of services and, thus, illegal.

I just checked out Speakeasy's Wifi NetShare feature:

                  http://www.speakeasy.net/netshare/learnmore/

There is the assumption that the people who share your connection are actually paying customers and are known to Speakeasy as customers as well. You, as the administrator choose how much to charge them and the more you charge them, the more your discount is. This doesn't sound like what the OP was talking about.

In any event, I edited my original message with the qualification.

                    Re: VUDU setup ???

Agreed. Yes, Speakeasy's program is exactly what you say.

In terms of "theft of service" - it is IMHO a little different with internet bandwidth than with TV. With TV, you are paying to watch copyrighted material. If I allow my neighbor to tap into my cable, he is not paying for viewing the copyrighted material.

Internet Bandwidth though is paying for a service. It is not paying to view copyrighted material. You pay for it wether you use it or not. Therefore, there really is no "stealing" per se. Additionally, if I choose to let you into my LAN via a wireless connection that is my business. So my LAN gives a connection to the outside world. My intent is to give you access to my network. Under strict reading of the TOS, if I have my laptop outside of my house in my yard, I am technically outside my premises and therefore in violation of the TOS. Or worse yet, say I have my laptop sitting by your pool surfing the web. I am on your property and therefore I am really violating the TOS. But it could be argued that it's my computer and I'm paying for the service. Oh yeah, but how about when you bring your laptop to my pool party at my house. It's not the computer of the person paying for the service.

So, there are a lot of "gray" areas here where I don't think there is any legislative codification of what is legal and what isn't. I don't know how enforceable every term in the TOS is anyhow...At the end of the day, I don't think it can be called "illegal." That would imply that TOS's effectively make law - which they cannot do.

                      Re: VUDU setup ???

Well I won't pretend to be a lawyer but this link (posted earlier on this thread) does make it seem like it is at least illegal if he is using the connection without permission:

                      http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Florida_..._stealing_WiFi

though it appears the person with the Wifi access point is the one pressing charges, not the ISP. I think we can at least both agree that it would be very wrong to use someones Internet connection without their permission, especially if it is going to move over 30 GB of data a month. If he is doing that, my original warning seems accurate. If he isn't, my apologies to the OP.
