    iPad Downloads

Please help me work through some confusion. I understand that there is a Vudu app for iPad. However, Vudu's Device recommendations for iPad recommend accessing Vudu directly through the website instead of an app. That's what I have been doing for my iPad2. However, on my iPad I am only able to stream movies through Vudu's site - download is not an option. Do I have to get the app to download movies to my iPad to watch offline?

Yes, you will need to download and install the Vudu app in order to download and playback movies offline.

Thanks - I took the advice in the Devices link (that recommended otherwise) at face value. Would recommend that it be updated with this info.

No thank you for bringing this up to our attention. I'm going to ask about this and see if changes need to be made.

I have been using the Vudu App on my iPad2 for awhile now, no real complaints.

However, I was just on a 14 hour train ride and I could not get any my downloaded movies to play. Then I get an email from AT&T, iPad is 3g and WIFI, saying that I have gone over 100mb on a non-AT&T network.

In playing around with Vudu, if I disable 3g AND WIFI I cannot watch ANY movie I have downloaded on my iPad. I thought the entire purpose of downloading the movies to your mobile device is to watch them Offline. Why can I not watch them if I do not have a 3g or WIFI connection?

            Re: iPad Downloads

I would like an answer to this as well as I previously was able to use the VUDU app to watch the predownloaded movies I would select to download prior to a trip to my cabin or for a long flight where internet access was not possible, NOW with the latest release of the App this is NOT POSSIBLE.

Every time launch the VUDU app it looses its login info and doesnt allow me to go to the downloaded section of the app for playback offline. This means the entire purpose and usefulness of the app has been lost in teh last update.

I tend to be in remote areas of Alaska where the is no cell service let alone electricity or internet access. So when I am out at my cabin one of the only entertainment options I have is my ipad. Without being able to log in I have no way of accessing my downloaded movies from my now extensive UltraViolet collection. the entire purpose of which was to have a library to choose from for such periods of time.

This is how this service worked prior to its last two updates. If need be is it possible to get the OLDER version of the app till this is properly addressed and fixed so that we can make proper use of offline features again?

I am using an iPad gen 1 with IOS 5.1.1 which is as high as Apple will allow me to go as a throwaway early adopter user as far as they are concerned. With the latest version 2.1.1 vudu player from the app store.

As I said I am unable to retain my login information in the app as I used to be able to do which is what allowed me to use the app in OFFLINE mode (AIRPLANE MODE) at this moment, this is impossible to make use of as its not saving the login information in order to access my downloaded VUDU library when the internet is unavailable to me.

Please any assistance in getting this functionality back would be appreciated.

              Re: iPad Downloads

I was able to find the 2.0 version of the VUDU app in an old install of itunes. So I reinstalled that one using iTools and it works perfectly for offline functionality. Works in Airplane mode without having to sign in again on a nonexistant connection.

So I am currently redownloading several movies in my offline library for this use.

I just have to force myself NOT to update to 2.1.1 which seems is fundamentally flawed in the way it functions for this feature.

Please make it possible to do this fundamental function again in your next version.
(watch downloaded movies on the VUDU App without having to re-login when there is no internet connection)
From notes you have previously released it seems in 2.1.1 you have expired the cookie immediately, where as version 2.0 allowed us to have a 30 day cookie so re-login was not needed for when we had to go on a trip or whatever.

And PLEASE do not abandon ios 5.1.1 for the ipad generation 1 users out here. Its bad enough Apple has treated us early adopters as leapers they do not want to acknowledge any longer.

I had thought they had pushed out an update to fix this issue, but I guess it doesn't always work for everybody. Vudu really needs to concentrate on this app, and add some features, such as sorting, HD playability, and a download queue.

When I had the issue of having to re-login every time, a Vudu staffer had me delete the app and reinstall it. (Which also deletes your downloaded movies, but I was at home, not traveling, so it was no big deal.)

I'd say that since you can't access your downloads anyway, it might be worth it to try that while you're waiting to hear from Vudu.

I'm right with you...no hd or hdx versions on the iPad. Shooting yourself in the foot Vudu? I will just continue to buy the itunes version since I can playback in HD. Vudu is totally misleading...trying to push the purchase of the HDX pack, but you can't even watch in HD on the iPhone or iPad??

Don't you think if Vudu would allow HDX on iOS by now, especially since the iOS app came way before the Android app? I'm willing to bet it has something to do with Apple being a pain in the you know where with their restrictions and guidelines. Vudu afterall is their competitor right? Probably the same reason why we will probably never see the Vudu app on Apple TV. It makes sense to me.

                        Re: iPad Downloads

I think it's the other way around...there are many apps (network's such as HBO Go) that allow HD streaming and playback. I guess I don't understand how it wouldn't benefit Apple to allow HD with Vudu. Like I said, until it's fixed I will continue to buy Digital HD through iTunes vs Vudu. It's too bad because HDX looks awesome on desktop iMac

                          Re: iPad Downloads

HBO owns that content so of course they can stream it in HD. Vudu doesn't own their content, the studio does. Same with the content on iTunes. Since Vudu is on Apple's turf, they have no choice but to obey Apple's terms. Regardless, I do hope we get HDX playback soon on our iOS devices.

Thanks for the insight Vudu Witch md let's hope they can resolve and we can take advantage of HDX on our iOS devices? I love Vudu..works awesome on my 27" iMac. Have over 50 movies (roughly half from blu-Ray digital downloads and half purchases from Vudu directly). So until they get this fixed, I will just purchase from iTunes instead....HD across all of my devices

Apple does have a lot of restrictions for apps, for instance, it won't allow in app purchases of movies, music or books, without going through it's purchasing system, which adds 30% to the price. The HBO Go and Netflix apps allow HD on the iPad because they don't compete with the iTunes store. They are subscription models. Vudu is EST. However, it may not be an Apple restriction in this case, because the flixster app offers HD for some films. I think vudu needs to negotiate an agreement with the studio's to allow HD playback. They could also do some negotiating with HBO.
