There are many of us who agree with you that Vudu not offering HD or HDX on tablets is inexcusable, especially in today's streaming media world. Other companies are coming around to this. As a result, I am now watching my Ultraviolet movies in HD on CinemaNow on my Galaxy tablet, and my Disney purchases in HD on the Disney Movies Anywhere app.

When I bought movies from Vudu in HDX, I expected to be able to watch said movies in HDX on any device. And there are so many others like me who expect the same thing. The general public is not buying an HDX movie from Vudu just thinking it will be in HDX on TV or (sometimes) PC only. The general public doesn't think like that, nor should they, no matter how many small-font disclaimers Vudu puts out there. In today's world, we expect to be able to watch our Vudu HDX purchases in HDX on all our devices. Not to offer this is just bad business.

      Hello Daron,

This is a feature that we are well aware that our customers would love to have on their mobile device. If we could just turn on this feature we would but it requires more than that for it to become reality. It requires that all parties involved are in agreement for this to occur.

Hi Felipe. Thanks for the reply. Even if it's not the news I wanted to hear, I appreciate you passing on the information.

I am also happy to see a response from a VUDU employee. Can you elaborate more? I've been loyal to VUDU since I discovered it and have a lot of my movies on it. In fact, I watch VUDU and Netflix almost exclusively now. I am going to source a new vendor in the interim, because as the world evolves around your negotiated practices, we the consumers are the ones paying to keep the companies we support afloat and we define what quality means.

Please focus your attentions to rectifying this as you see fit, but it is a pivotal decision point for me in continuing my spending with VUDU until this is either resolved or explained that it will remain "as-is."

Your choices drive your success or failure, and I hope to have a continued relationship with VUDU.

          Thanks!

This wasn't such a big deal to me, until this Lollipop issue began to affect me, and I realized how many other competing UV and DMA services provide HD playback on mobile devices (it's more than one). I'm hoping Vudu can get on board with this soon.

Flixster, CinemaNow and (for Nook HD/HD+ & Galaxy Tab 4 Nook 10" only) Nook Video on the UV side, plus Google Play and possibly DMA itself on the DMA side, have all managed to get "all parties involved... in agreement" for HD playback on Android tablets with the required DRM support. (Not all Androids with "HD-quality" displays qualify, but my Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4" does.) Even Paramount Movies apparently now allows HD playback in its Android app of the very latest Paramount films redeemed or bought there (though not older films or outside UV licenses, even for Paramount films).

Perhaps Vudu couldn't get the parties together in 2013, but why not today? It was a minor annoyance back when Flixster was apparently limiting HD on Android to Warner Bros. films, but now that's no longer true; most UV HD titles will now play there in HD on Android. And more and more tablets now come with microSDXC support -- a necessity for HD downloads due to the 4 GB FAT32 file size limit, and apparently also a Google requirement for full HD support on Android. (Thanks to DRM, the Android 4.4.x restrictions on external SD cards are not at issue as long as Vudu writes to the card properly; I believe you already do.)

IMO Vudu is still vastly superior to all other UV vendors, and even UV's own site, in many aspects: SD PQ on nearly all titles, depth of catalog, handling of large user libraries, handling of TV series, device support beyond Android (especially HDX & 3D), and the list goes on. However, being limited to SD playback on my Tab Pro with 2560 x 1600 resolution -- well beyond 1080p in both dimensions, and halfway to UHD vertically -- has limited my use of Vudu in recent months, especially on DMA titles. It's way past time for Vudu to jump through all the hoops and start supporting HD (if not HDX) playback on Android.

Re: No HD or HDX on tablets

If the other digital movie vendors are able to get the studios to agree to allow them to stream their movies in HD on tablets, then Vudu could as well. They are dealing with the same studios. My guess is they are working on encoding them into a DRM format that will work on the tablets, or they don't want to pay the increased licencing fees it would take to allow it.

Very good points, echopulse and RBBrittain. Paramount also allows HD viewing on it's iPad app now. Everyone else is getting on board. In the long run, I think it's going to cost Vudu more by not providing HDX on tablets. It needs to just pay the required money to Apple or whomever, and provide HDX in order to remain a player, literally and figuratively.

you can now add m-go to the list hd streaming list.
that makes vudu the only uv partner that does not stream hd on tablets/phones.

In addition to M-GO adding HD, B&N now supports HD playback in the regular Nook reading app for Android -- no longer limited to Nook hardware. (I may have missed it earlier because they didn't add it to the old Nook Video app for non-Nook Androids.) Thus, I can now stream movies in HD on my Tab Pro from every UV & DMA service with an Android app except Vudu.

It's pretty hard to understand how Walmart, the biggest home entertainment retailer on Earth, does not have the clout or cash enough to make the same deals as M-Go or literally any other UV retailer. Unbelievable that it's taking this long, the SD streams just look terrible compared to any other provider.

There are already 4K tablets on the horizon such as the Panasonic Toughpad and the rumoured Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet Ultra. Also, a lot of phones can output in 4K so isn't it time for 4K?! I think Vudu will miss 1080p and go straight to 4K...
