Playback available in SD only on new tablet

Hi, I'm setting up a new tablet (Lenovo Tab P12 Pro) and your app is is only letting me stream purchases in SD on the device. The tablet is widevine l1 compatible and I'm able to stream HD content fine over other streaming services (Netflix, Amazon, Paramount+, Disney+). Why is your app not allowing me to stream HD content?

Netflix and Google play movie purchases play back at 1080p fine as well. It's just the Vudu app that's stuck in SD only. Is there anything that can be done to fix this?

Same issue on Windows and Mac with Chrome and most other browsers. Studio required Vudu to increase to a level of security unavailable in those browsers. However on those machines it’s basically only MS Edge that meets the requirement. Plenty of forum threads on the topic.

Hi, thanks for the reply, however I'm not using a browser, I'm using the Vudu Android app on an Android tablet. The only requirement that I see listed in other posts is "widevine l1” and
        1. According to Lenovo support this tablet is widevine l1 certified
        2. According to the "DRM Info" app I saw referenced in other posts, this tablet supports widevine l1 as well, confirming what I was told by Lenovo.
        3. According to googles page on widevine the other streaming services I use also all use widevine. As there able to stream 1080p just fine, it doesn't seem like this is a widevine issue.
If there's any other requirements that Vudu requires for 1080p video or anything else that I should check please let me know what they are, but from the limited amount of information I've been able to find it seems like my tablet should work. Thanks!

Understood but it's driven by security. Devices have also lost functionality due to hardware no longer being supported, firmware, operating system, app itself. People often blame Vudu, but in most cases it's just to comply with studios.

Point being that it can be any number of things. Recently it's been about Vudu having to lock our browsers (or devices) based on requirements from the studios. Those requirements may not be the same with Netflix, Amazon, Paramount+, Disney+, etc.

It's quite common that those other services might support HD or UHD on something when Vudu can't. They may not even use the same streaming format; which could be another issue.

Chasing done where it falls apart isn't easy. Good luck.

While I understand that Vudu ultimately needs to comply with the studios and may not be able to do anything about the issue, they also don't have any clear information posted anywhere for what is and is not supported. Netflix for example has a list of which android tablets are supported for HD and HDR (which my tablet is on).

As far as hardware / firmware / os / etc - its a new tablet, its only been out a few months, its running the latest version of Android 11, so lacking any clear guidelines from Vudu, there's no reason to think that it wouldn't work. I also don't see any point in buying something different without knowing why this one doesn't work in the first place as I could just end up with the same problem again.

I think I've been a pretty good customer for Vudu over the years - I spent over $200 on their website last month alone and well over $1000 last year. However if no one at Vudu wants to help me here or respond to the email I sent support, then I have no choice but to stop being their customer and redirect that money to other services like Amazon that actually work right.

Vudu used to manage such a list. It was important in early days when you were trying to see if your device supported HDX or just SD; as UHD wasn't around then. Likewise it told you which devices supported 3D; before home 3D largely collapsed years ago.

People we're often streaming with 3D Blu-Ray players back then. I'd say half of the 3D Blu-Ray's supported 3D on Vudu and no one could understand why their 3D with Vudu app or their 3D Blu-Ray w/ Vudu app couldn't play Vudu 3D when they could play 3D Blu-Ray's.

Anyway the list just got bigger and bigger and more out of control and was apps were updated and studios changed contracts it wasn't always right.

I just bought several Blu-Ray players to see which worked with Vudu 3D and then picked one of those that did and returned the rest.

There was never one good source of information, even on the forums as no one maintained as list of what worked or didn't.

I'm not buying a bunch of $700 - $800 tablets just to see if I can find one that works with Vudu. Plus tablets do a lot more then blu-ray players so trying to find one that can handle everything I need it to do is a lot more complicated then just checking Vudu compatibility. If Vudu support can't be bothered to respond to my emails or assist through their forums then I'm just going to stick with the Lenovo tablet and stop using their service / stop spending a few hundred a month on their website as I have no way of knowing why this tablet doesn't work or if any of the other tablets I was looking at would work better. Amazon can have my money if Vudu doesn't want it, their support is actually reachable.

Didn’t suggest you had to. Was relaying my own experiences back in the day with trying to get 3D working with Vudu. Everything I need works fine these days with my iPhone, iPad Pro, AppleTV 4K 2021 and Roku Ultra 2021.

                  Best of luck.

It looks like Vudu blocked HD on ALL Lenovo tablets back in March 2021. Given that this tablet wasn't released until November 2021, it'd be nice if someone at Vudu would review if this was still contractually necessary or not. Or at least publicly acknowledge that they're blocking HD on an entire brand of tablet that otherwise meets all of the official requirements for HD streaming.

I’m sure Vudu wouldn’t do it intentionally. Either either at request of the studios or a simple mistake.

I just bought a Lenovo P11 Pro Gen 2, and thought I can watch HDX or UHD on it, or even download so I can watch a movie when camping. My phone can do it but it's too small. Maybe I should bring a laptop?

Wish I would have seen this before I bought my Lenovo M10! One of the reasons I went with Lenovo vs a Fire tablet was native Google support. I never would have thought a tablet bought in 2023 would only be able to play SD content.

Vudu seems to be the only streaming service limiting the tablets to SD content. If you sync your library to movies anywhere and then try to watch the movie with any other service (assuming it's a title that supports movies anywhere) it'll play back in HD just fine. I personally have stopped giving Vudu my money and have been slowly re-purchasing my non-movies anywhere content on a competent streaming service.

Limitations are often at request of the Studios themselves. Typically not the retailer, like Vudu.

Plenty streaming services have limitations on playback for 4K or even HD for any number of reasons. For example: browser security, hardware security, exclusive Studio contracts.

Studios have specific security requirements for each retailer.

Retailers have to work within the limitations of each hardware device and associated app to meet the Studio requirements. This may not always be possible and some devices need to be dropped over time or lowered stream quality. Throw into the mix companies like Apple who Vudu has to work around - like not allowing purchases in app. Then you have Netflix (and others) who Apple treats as an exception in way.
