    New MX-810 Universal Remote

    Good morning.

I have a new MX-810 remote that can do both IR and RF. I'm wondering if anyone has one or knows if I can use it to control my Vudu?

If so, any input on setup would be greatly appreciated.

No. The RF capabilities of remotes like that are designed to basically send a signal to a remote receiver which will then in turn use IR blasters to control your equipment. It's not capable of being programmed with the RF codes for the Vudu. I don't think any manufacturer who makes RF remote controllable devices has published "codes." There's too much variance in possible RF technology. Some remotes work in ranges like 350 MHz or so (where garage door openers work). Some like Vudu work at 430 MHz. Some work down around 70 MHz. Some work up at 900 MHz and some at 2.4 GHz. It's basically impossible to have a "universal RF remote" as all could use different modulation technology for the RF signal and the frequency ranges could vary so much. It's much different than having the IR codes. It would be technically possible to have a universal RF remote I guess, but it wouldn't be something that would be cost effective!

I am expecting and hoping that Vudu will offer some sort of IR interface in the future. We'll have to wait and see.

I'm curious why they didn't build an IR solution into the box? Between both IR and RF that would make it extremely versatile. Also allowing you to use your own universal remote.

Simplicity was the goal of the VUDU, this extends to the remote with scroll wheel which sets it apart from other devices. Also since the the VUDU is an appliance it can be put into a cabinet thus the RF interface.

Also arrows and repeating IR commands are problematic with large lists and the ability to navigate them. I notice this with DirectTV when I try to rapidly move down the menu or even spell out a movie title or search for actors and such. There has been other folks with Apple TV here that also find that the navigation with the IR remote can be a frustrating experience. I have yet to see a IR remote that is as precise as the VUDU RF remote.

I don't know if the MX-810 uses RF just to bridge IR commands or whether it can actually be programmable to match the VUDU's RF codes. I'll ping our remote experts...

            Re: New MX-810 Universal Remote

Most (if not all) RF capable remotes can't learn other RF remotes codes. One of the main differences between IR and RF remotes is that RF remotes of different vendors usually operate at different frequencies. IR remotes usually use the same modulation freqency on the IR signal (38 kHz).

This makes it easy for universal IR remotes to be trained to work as any other IR remote. They only need to be told (or learn) the actual timing of the codes that a remote uses.

For RF remotes you would have to know what exact frequency the other remote works on and how the remote signal gets modulated... ...not an easy task. You can find some RF capable remotes that support other devices that are more wide spread (like Bose sound systems or certain lighting controll systems).

Right now the only way to control our box besides our RF remote is the netremote feature. If you have a PC in your system you can try to get the LIRC to netremote scripts in the provided package to work...

...and there might be some good news regarding IR control on the horizon.
            Hagen.

Universal Remotes is one of the manufacturers that we will support with our IR release.

When is the IR solution planned for release?

If we told you, we'd have to kill you. But not too long, I believe. I don't know any specifics yet (if I did I couldn't say anything). I do think you will be happy when it happens.

Comment: It has been my experience that a really well designed box specific remote can be so appealing that you would rather use it instead of a universal. My higher end Sony AV-3000 Touch Screen back lit LCD remote is programmed to control everything I have, but I still reach for my comfy ReplayTV 5000 series remote because it just "feels better". I think I'd rather use my Vudu remote even if I didn't have to.

I'm beginning to think that way too. If only the Vudu remote had volume control on it, I could at least control volume while watching a movie with just one remote.

Still it will be nice to have it all integrated at some point.

When I'm watching an HD movie with a good 5.1 soundtrack, I just set my volume for 11 (Spinal Tap reference) and enjoy the subwoofer massage.
