Actually, hacking the AppleTV 2.0 to add additional functionality is not likely to tick off the content owners. Apple has a pretty rock solid DRM system in FairPlay. So, adding additional modules to run or codecs to allow playing other media formats isn't going to hurt anything.

The annoying thing is that Apple just should have put all the other codec support on the product in the first place. I agree that MPEG-4/H.264 is the best video format, but they should have allowed others. Instead, it forces you to use the products from their store (or convert to that format) which is just what they want you to do!

Have you ever considered running XBMC on a modded Xbox? It's amazing what it can do. It can stream almost anything that you throw at it. The only real limitation at this point is that it can't do HD very well at all. But once they complete the port of XBMC to Linux then I don't think there will be anything out there than can come close to it.
Yes, I have thought about it. However, among other things I need something that will support HD as well. XBMC on Linux would be nice, but I don't know if that would be a cost-effective solution. HD extenders like SageTV's or Popcorn Hour's are about $200, but building a small HTPC capable of playing HD is way more expensive since extenders use cheap but dedicated hardware whereas PCs use general purpose processors.

It cost me something around $1000 to built my HTPC (AOpen's MiniPC) back in early 2007. I like it very much and am probably one of few people satisfied with Vista Ultimate (if anyone's having issues with playback just get CCCP codec pack and add CoreAVC).

I've got my eye on AOpen's MiniPC for running XBMC on Linux. I think it will be the best thing going. $1,000 though? I was thinking I could probably do it for $600ish. But who cares - there's not a lot of difference between $600 and $1,000 and XBMC is by far the most flexible software around (IMHO).

My biggest problem with using Media Center Extender is that it's just not as flexible as XBMC. With XBMC I can add in some really nice functionality to make the system open to my entire family. My 4 year old daughter knows how to pick up the remote (Harmony 890) hit the "DVD-Kids" button and then select the show she wants to watch. I can easily program my remote to jump right to the screen with just the kids DVDs or my DVDs with just one button press.

It doesn't stop there - I can customize almost anything in the system that I want to. On top of all that - it's blazing fast. I've used the Xbox 360 as a media center extender and it was very sluggish. Just browsing my DVD library was slow (going from thumbnail to thumbnail) and then switching between windows was slow.

The only drawback to XBMC on the Xbox now is that it can't do HD.

Once the Linux port is stable enough for a non-technical person like myself then I'll be all over it!

I think the main drawback for Popcorn Hour is the GUI sucks. SageTV is pretty nice - I've looked into it but I think my main issue there was that it didn't support ISOs or seems to support DVD streaming very well (but I could be wrong).

I am pretty sure current version of SageTV works with ISOs, but then I stopped keeping up with HD Extender forum after I realized it's not going to be available again for awhile. But IMHO, HD and PH are the lowest cost/most featured streamers. Proper Media Center Extenders (like Linksys) aren't good since they don't support all the codecs/features, AFAIK.

Insofar as the price of my MiniPC, I don't honestly recall the exact $$$ since I sourced it from different sources and I used specials & discounts, it went something like this:
            $400 - barebones
            $250 - Core2 Duo CPU (mobile)
            $150 - RAM
            $150 - HDD
            $130 - Vista Ultimate OEM

Mind you, it was a year ago so some components would be cheaper, especially RAM.

I can say with certainty that as of right now 1.2 has not been released to the public. There's still time left in January...

                What for software version 1.2....

Well tomorrow is the end of the month. I need my HD now!!!!

I think my wife is getting tired of my switching on the Vudu every so often to check if there is an update yet

How does it work with a software update? When you turn it on does it prompt you to update the software or do you have to initiate it manually.

It's never off, unless you unplug it. As long as it's plugged in and the ethernet connection is good, you'll automatically get any update as soon as it's made available, whether your box is 'on' or 'off'.

It happens automatically. There may be a screen that you will see if the screen saver isn't active and the update begins. But most is done behind the scenes when the VUDU is idle.

After the update is completed there may be a message displayed that the update was applied and other information pertaining to the update.

                              Ron is correct.

Most updates are pushed down in the wee hours of the morning or when the box isn't busy. There is a nice screen that shows up if the screen save is off like Ron stated. All in all, the firmware update takes about 10 minutes and that includes 2 reboots. It's pretty quick.

This update is not something that you won't know about. It's dramatically different than previous updates. You will be told and you will have to do a few things to enable HD streaming. The box walks you through it nicely though and if you have > 4 MB/sec of downstream bandwidth - hang it - it's going to be a wild ride!

                                Don't let her stop (please!).

I check this thread often to find out if she got the release yet.

If she stops, I'll have to get off my butt to go check myself. Show some sympathy!
