It cost me something around $1000 to built my HTPC (AOpen's MiniPC) back in early 2007. I like it very much and am probably one of few people satisfied with Vista Ultimate (if anyone's having issues with playback just get CCCP codec pack and add CoreAVC).
I've got my eye on AOpen's MiniPC for running XBMC on Linux. I think it will be the best thing going. $1,000 though? I was thinking I could probably do it for $600ish. But who cares - there's not a lot of difference between $600 and $1,000 and XBMC is by far the most flexible software around (IMHO).

My biggest problem with using Media Center Extender is that it's just not as flexible as XBMC. With XBMC I can add in some really nice functionality to make the system open to my entire family. My 4 year old daughter knows how to pick up the remote (Harmony 890) hit the "DVD-Kids" button and then select the show she wants to watch. I can easily program my remote to jump right to the screen with just the kids DVDs or my DVDs with just one button press.

It doesn't stop there - I can customize almost anything in the system that I want to. On top of all that - it's blazing fast. I've used the Xbox 360 as a media center extender and it was very sluggish. Just browsing my DVD library was slow (going from thumbnail to thumbnail) and then switching between windows was slow.

The only drawback to XBMC on the Xbox now is that it can't do HD.

Once the Linux port is stable enough for a non-technical person like myself then I'll be all over it!

Have you ever considered running XBMC on a modded Xbox? It's amazing what it can do. It can stream almost anything that you throw at it. But once they complete the port of XBMC to Linux then I don't think there will be anything out there than can come close to it.

Actually, hacking the AppleTV 2.0 to add additional functionality is not likely to tick off the content owners. Apple has a pretty rock solid DRM system in FairPlay. So, adding additional modules to run or codecs to allow playing other media formats isn't going to hurt anything.

The annoying thing is that Apple just should have put all the other codec support on the product in the first place. I agree that MPEG-4/H.264 is the best video format, but they should have allowed others. Instead, it forces you to use the products from their store (or convert to that format) which is just what they want you to do!

Pricing ($3.99/$4.99 for HD, $1 premium over SD prices) is going to be the only advantage that Apple TV will have when it comes to rentals. Although it performs other media extender functions which I'd really like Vudu to have.

Hey, maybe if we stop answering your questions, you'll have to buy one to find out!

That falls within what we have seen so far. Nothing to say that it can't move in either direction (up or down), depending upon studio negotiations. Again, I emphasize that I would love to be able to pay $49.99 on opening week to "rent" a movie that is running in the theaters. Combine this with a decling scale (say $39 rentals in week 2, $29 rentals from week 3 forward until it leaves the cinemas), and you would have a solution very appealing to some Vudu owners (not all of course). I would much rather watch the latest Harry Potter or X-Men movie in my home theater, instead of the sticky, smelly, noisy public theater.

Actually, HD library (catalog) titles are going to be 3.99:

    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles...e_pricing.html

DVD-quality iTunes Movie Rentals are $2.99 for library titles and $3.99 for new releases, and high definition versions are just one dollar more with library titles at $3.99 and new releases at $4.99. Apple will provide the new Apple TV software free of charge to existing Apple TV owners when it releases the new Apple TV priced at $229 in about two weeks, the company said.

Yes, Ed. That is correct and I'd put odds at 95% too.

I hope the Vudu guys didn't bite off more than they could chew at CES...

I would bet the naysayers already have their articles written and ready to publish Feb 1 if Vudu doesn't deliver the 1.2 software update and at least 70 HD titles by midnight 1/31/08.

I've been holding off renting movies waiting for the 1.2 release, because why would I watch it in SD if HD was available? Even with the price increase for HD (which I'm hoping will quickly fall due to Apple's announced prices), that's a lot of movies ($400/$5.99 = 67) I'd have to rent before I even get to the cost of just buying a decent BlueRay player. By the time I've watch 60+ movies BlueRay profile 2 players should be a lot cheaper anyway.
