    Kudos to Vudu Customer Service

Okies, so I was scrolling through the movies (I love the word scrolling ever since I got my Vudu!) and AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA my scroll died!

It was absolutely horrible! one second I was scrolling and the next nada! I press all the other buttons and they work fine. Just no scroll. I change the batteries. No scroll magic. I turn the machine off. No scrollination. I re-pair the remote to the box. Scroll power is gone!

    So I call customer service.

*this is a fairly accurate dramatization from my less than perfect memory*

Vudu Customer Service, how may I help you?

Hello, my name is Steven Rushing and I can't get my scroll on! My scroll broke and I don't know what to do. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Calm down Mr. Rushing. I will get one right out to you first thing. Is there anything else I can do for you Mr. Rushing?

    Um. No. Thanks. Click.

And then I realized something. The flippin idiot hadn't gotten my address or given me an RMA# or a confirmation number or ANYTHING.

So I call back and talk to the same guy. He says "yeah, no prob man, I got you in the computer. You live in Hawaii right?" (in a very professional way. My memory is going.)

So I politely thank him and there you go! Score one for Vudu Customer Service!

While I've personally only talked to customer services once myself, I definitely give them high marks as well for there responsiveness, friendliness, and helpfulness. In these days and ages it is hard to find good customer service, and VUDU is definitely on top of their game in this regards. I can even begin to tell you how many horrible experinces I've had with other companies who give you the run around, won't actually let you talk to a person, or won't respond in a timely manner to email, if at all.

Now, going back to the original issue with the scrolling on the remote. I would say that I experience this periodically on all 5 of my remotes. Last night, in fact, in the middle of scrolling, it just started becoming non-responsive. The other buttons kind of worked, but they were "iffy" too. I tested the batteries even though they were new and they were good. I eventually got where I was going and was just relieved. One time, my son turned on a wireless transmitter for his VeXplorer robot and that completely stopped my remote from working. As soon as he turned it off, it came back to "normal".

4 of the 5 remotes are in my house and set to different frequencies. The other is in my dad's house. I have set them all to high sensitivity to try to fix it but that has made absolutely no difference. I must say that I find this remote even beyond extremely frustrating. I have IR remotes galore and have zero difficulty with any of them. I feel like coming to Vudu HQ and begging on my hands and knees for an IR remote. Since all 5 of them do it, I am quite confident it isn't a defect with any one of them. It is more likely interference with some other wireless stuff I have going on. In any event, it is my single biggest frustration with the product.

Your remote is on its way. You should have it by Thursday.

        Yours truly,

FYI, in case you've missed it, a USB wheely mouse can be plugged into your Vudu to keep things going until your new remote arrives.

And a good sense of humor to boot. Very funny.

Try setting the remote to a lower setting. With it in high sensitivity it will be more prone to picking up other signals and also have a longer range. I had mine set to high once and then changed back to normal after I experienced problems.

Oh . . . and John, I never heard of anyone being called a "flipping idiot" and still be congratulated for doing a good job. Sounds like you're doing alright over there!

Karen's right. Try lowering the sensitivity...

                That might work.

Karen and Jon are right. Higher sensitivity picks up more noise and the process that the VUDU uses to ignore this noise makes the remote look like it is having issues.

And um, how do I lower the sensitivity of the remote? =)

                      Use your Vudu remote.

                      1. Start on the Vudu Home Page (Vudu button on remote)

                      2. Go to Info & Settings

                      3. Advanced Settings

                      4. Remote Settings

                      5. Switch to "normal".

Let me know if this helps!

Well, the other night when I was having the problem, it was set to normal so I tried high. It didn't fix it so lowering it to normal won't have help their. Sometimes it works perfectly fine too. The problem is, I never know how it will behave.

It kind of reminds me of the problems I was having with IR after I installed CFL lights. The remotes wouldn't respond (and my repeater was getting flooded with IR noise). I bought a CFL/LCD "proof" repeater and that fixed that problem. I'm not sure what will work here. I will probably do some experimenting to see what's interfering. Could another Logitech cordless mouse and keyboard nearby affect it?

I just had a thought. I wonder if it is my iPhone. My wife doesn't have the problem nearly as much and she doesn't carry hers with her like I do. I noticed that a number of speakers in my house buzz occasionally when I walk by them with it. Since the remote problem (and the buzzing) don't happen 100% of the time, turning it on and trying it wouldn't be a conclusive test. I'll try turning off my phone when I have the problem again to see if that helps. That would be good if that turned out the be the culprit. If it does, I'll post a thread with my findings.

I know Jon will consider this a blasphemy, but would you be willing to put down your iPhone and leave it in a different room for a few minutes? Purely for diagnostic reasons, not as a long term solution.

I don't know whose worse, the iPhone-aholics or the crack-berry users.

The sound you hear in your speakers when you iPhone is around is typical of all GSM phones. Any time the phone needs to search for tower signal to lock on to you get it. I don't care who's phone you use - they all exhibit this.

It's certainly possible the iPhone could be causing a problem, but IMHO, unlikely. The phone works at 800 MHz and the remote down at 430 MHz - or about half the frequency. It's more likely for the remote to interfere with the iPhone than the other way around (but yet still unlikely). It'd be worth a try though to leave the iPhone elsewhere just to see if it has an effect.

Just for info . . . the remote also has a "low" setting, lower than "normal".
