    Time For a New Vudu

My wife took one of our Vudus on a trip but it won't be coming back alive. She was setting it up and it slipped out of her hand and crashed onto a tile floor. Now it makes a horrible noise and won't boot. I believe it was powered on at the time (don't even say it). Anyway, at least the price has just come down.

Given the state of the economy your purchase of a new VUDU will only serve to help in our recovery

Well I just picked up the new one. It was interesting that the Best Buy closest to me had none in stock and one maybe 5 miles away had about 10. Both stores were in San Jose and had similar size Magnolia HT areas. I bought a couple of new HP TouchSmart PCs while I was there to further stimulate the economy.

At least she dropped it after the price reduction.

Although I'm still not sure why someone would be moving around a device like that while is was powered up.

She hooked it up at her friends house and, when it wasn't working correctly, she tried to "fix" it and it slipped out of her hand.

The technology is pretty cool in that you can almost do completely without a mouse, but we will end up probably using a mouse anyway as it isn't yet natural to reach out and touch the screen. I bought them as an alternative "all in one" to the iMacs because all of our computers are Windows boxes and that's what I'm used to working with. The one thing that seems the most strange about them when compared to the iMAc is that the iMac has a stand so the screen is perfectly vertical. The HPs have an integrated easel which makes the screen lean back quite a few degrees. There is nothing you can really do about it because if you tried to prop it up straight it would be very likely to tip forward. I'm not sure what they were thinking there. I would have preferred a stand that compensates for the center of gravity issue.

Anyway, they are going to be used in the kids' rooms as their desktop PCs and they are happy with them. They have laptops that they use downstairs. I setup Hulu accounts for them to try it out because of the buzz here about Hulu (and Alec Baldwin Super Bowl ad). I must say that my expectations were not met with it. It's just not tied together as nicely as I thought it would be and going to full screen viewing seems to cause the video to just stop (while the audio plays). At least that's how it is running on these virgin boxes running 64 bit Vista.
