Shoot! I just found out that some kid I went to HS with is in a movie, but...

...it's for sale only! I didn't really know the kid, but do remember him and would like to see it.

Do movies ever go from "buy only" status to "rent" status?

Yes, particularly newer movies. They get to vudu first as purchases and after about 4 weeks, they become available for rent.

    What's the movie?

      Thanks garm.

The movie is "Mr. Fix It" with that dude from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The fella I know is Herschel Bleefield. Was in a Six Feet Under episode that I saw and didn't even notice...

I've noticed the purchase to rental before, but how about the other way around? Do rental only ever become available for purchase?

Funny you should ask this. I don't know of Rental only going to purchase only but I do know of at least one rental/purchase that has regressed to purchase only.

The Lives of Others is a newer movie that was rentable but is no longer. As I've explained before the licensing is complicated and purchasing and renting require different licenses. I've asked Vudu to better explain why this happens and when the movie would become rentable again. As soon as I get a good explanation, I'll be sure to post it.

I thought there are different windows for rentals? When some movies go to HBO, SHowtime etc, they can't be rented during that time period, only purchased(or nothing at all). Once the window of showing for those channels runs out then it can go back to rental.

Yes, that is correct, but then I don't think you'll see them at all on Vudu. This movie that I found, "The Lives of Others" does not have a blackout window.

I dunno. Maybe the licenses expire and need to be renewed...

That really makes NO sense though. You can still rent the movie from blockbuster if the movie is on HBO. Blockbuster doesn't remove the movie from their shelves.

That was one of my biggest complaint about blackout windows and such. You don't ever hear the content owner tell Netflix or Blockbuster to remove the title from circulation while its on HBO or Showtime.

I guess the logisitcs to pull it from the shelves not just the big guys but also the independents would be impossible for them. But this is the new world of distribution and they are still learning.

Well, I never said it made sense!

I agree with you - it doesn't make sense. None of the restrictions make sense, but they are there. Keep this in mind: The studios invest in or back certain physical media formats. They also have ownership interests in the premium movie channels (ie: Warner Bros owns part or all of HBO). So if they have money invested in physcial media and money invested in premium channels, who gets the short shrift?
