    Warranty

Below is the current warranty for the hard drive and the purchased content that resides on it.

"If VUDU has to repair or replace your
VUDU Equipment, or if content is lost
due to a failure of the hard drive in the
VUDU Equipment, VUDU will, to the best
of its ability and within the rights granted
to it by its content licensors, replace
all purchased (but not rented) movies
or other purchased (but not rented)
    entertainment content that you acquired
from VUDU and that is or are stored on
    your VUDU Equipment (?Content?), for
a period of one (1) year from the date of
    such Content?s purchase."

If I am reading this correctly there really needs to be something done here. After reading this I am not going to purchase any more movies due to the fact that there is no back up system. If VUDU will not warranty the hard drive for life, than there needs to be a way to back up your purchases. I don't want to purchase 500 or 1000 in movies have the hard drive crash and lose all of that content. That makes no sense. Please advise if I am missing something here.

    Thanks

You are not missing anything here. There is a backup capability that VUDU is planning to release that will allow external USB drives to be attached and content placed on these drives.

We don't know the exact date that VUDU is releasing the software for external storage but it is coming. I believe that one of their press releases they talked about having this capability within 6 months of product launch (11/2007).

So if your HD did fail as you are purchasing content right now you would get that content back until 1 year of your purchase date. We should have external HD capabilities before then.

      Re: Warranty

So what happens if it happens to fail in 2 years? I would hope they would still replace your content on any replacemnet VUDU box you purchase.

I also just activated my second box!

        Re: Warranty

The actual statement from Vudu is that your purchases are guaranteed for good. The warranty is strictly related to your hardware. If your drive fails 10 years from now, there will be a method for your movies to be reloaded. This process has not been developed yet but it is something that is coming.

Again, the warranty referenced is related to the Vudu hardware. You may have to purchase new hardware if your hardware fails after a year (or pay for repair) but your content is a different story. Vudu should codify this in writing, but this is what we have been told.

          Re: Warranty

VUDU needs to clarify because the warranty in the box does state:

If VUDU has to repair or replace your VUDU Equipment, or if content is lost due to a failure of the hard drive in the VUDU Equipment, VUDU will, to the best of its ability and within the rights granted to it by its content licensor's, replace all purchased (but not rented) movies
or other purchased (but not rented) entertainment content that you acquired from VUDU and that is or are stored on your VUDU Equipment ("Content"), for a period of one (1) year from the date of such Content's purchase."

            Re: Warranty

Agreed. It should be something codified because the box is certainly something different from what my understanding of it is. It wouldn't be good business to make customers repurchase content due to a hardware failure 5 years in. I don't think Vudu wants to do that as they want you to be happy and purchase movies!
