    Re: Question about new update??

After receiving the update the setting for Your Preferred HDMI Resolution was Auto?Takes the preferred resolution from the HDMI TV (1080I)

Prior to the update the preferred resolution from the HDMI TV was (1080P)

I was able to manually select 1080P.

Is there any reason for this ???

Sorry I wasn't as informed about the XL as you, because I'm a true blue renter so it wasn't of much interest to me.

It was just a thought, that maybe I shouldn't have spoken.

It's no problem, and if they would let me buy one right now I probably would, but thanks for the suggestion anyways.

That may be, but people like me account for the $1.3+ billion a year in VHS/DVD/HD sales, so good luck getting those in that target market to ever sign on to VUDU as a product, if you are going to discount them just because they aren't your target market for this box.

Speaking of which, if we arn't your target market why even allow people to purchase at all? Why even waste money developing a VUDU XL, when those customers are obviously the same customers as me.

Well Netflix does quite well and they don't sell movies. I used to be part of that $1.3+ billion a year market and now I'm spending my money on Vudus and rentals. Why, because convenience is the product I really want. I "had" to buy movies in the past. I never "wanted" to. So, even if you don't adopt the usage pattern that VOD is really geared for, don't assume that others won't.

Also, it isn't like they have said they won't support external storage and the ability to delete content from the boxes and redownload for free later so I don't see where they are discounting that market segment. They just seem to be prioritizing in a reasonable manner.

For some small number of movies that one knows they are going to watch over and over, it can make sense. I will say that is not the case for the vast majority of the ~700 DVDs that I now own. When you factor in the cost of hardware to support VOD with my DVDs, I come out way behind purchasing DVDs. That's why I will almost always rent.

With regards to adding/expanding your own storage, and having the ability to move/manage/delete files on your Vudu, please remember what JohnA said earlier in this thread:

As soon as we have an indication of how soon "soon" will be, we'll post an update on this board. Given their track record, when Vudu says something is going to happen, you can expect it to happen. Unlike some other misleading products.

OTOH, the center audio track in StarTrek I was very muddy.

Whoa! You are taking this way, way too personal here. No one is discounting anything here. It's understood very well that people like yourself want additional storage. But the bigger need in the market to make Vudu a leader was to get HD streaming functioning. There has been no other product that offers this outside the little HD content you get streamed over cable VOD. No other internet based service had done this and its something the market wants. Far more people have expressed this than expressed the need for storage.

Vudu stated in October that the time frame for rolling out the external storage was going to be around 6 months. They have a plan for rolling out the product and are executing it. It's going to happen. But you've got sour grapes because the feature YOU wanted now isn't there. Vudu has a limited amount of staff and a limited amount of testers. There's only so much that can be done or frankly should be done at any one time. There's an old saying that goes, "How do you eat an elephant?" The answer is: "One bite at a time." If you put the whole apple (no pun intended) in your mouth at once you'll choke. If you eat it bite by bite you'll enjoy it.

So sit back, relax and enjoy some HD rentals. Vudu has made good on every promise so far.

No, I'm irritated that I can not use my box as was expected. I have movies I paid for that I have to re-download if i want to watch them, I have others I have not watched, but don't want to download for fear of maxing out my HDD again and having to call CSR to have them delete stuff again, I have other movies I would love to see, but are purchase only but don't cant download because If I did I would probably run out of space again! Also, I can not use my box to watch movies how I want, due to its limitations. Lastly, maybe the real problem is that people within VUDU, yourself included, did not set the expectations in a way that would of left someone like me feeling the way I am. After all, if you VUDU had said, "Hey we are working on it, and it should be in the next 2-3 months" I would of been content with that, but when I kept hearing it's coming soon, or it should be in the next release, you set that expectation high, and when you fail to deliverer on a perceived expectation, your bound to annoying people.

This I don't understand. It was entirely obvious that the box had limited storage when you bought it. It was also obvious that the limited storage wouldn't impact rentals which made it the obvious expected primary usage pattern. I'm not sure how you could have expected anything other than that.

Also, Vudu has done a great job of moving this product forward and delivering on their promises. If you compare them to Apple with their current slip, I don't know how you could say anything different. It seems odd to me that on a day that a new feature becomes available that obviously makes many people very happy, you would find fault in it. Just observe how many people have been clamoring for more HD content (and content in general) compared to the requests for more HDD space. Clearly both are wanted but delivering on HD first was the only sensible thing for Vudu to do. After all, without the content, what good is the drive. The content, however, can be enjoyed with the drive that is already in the box.

Have we been reading the same forums?? Or did you just not read the many threads that said that they were working to resolve the storage problem, and would be coming soon, hence the expectation of a solution.
Regardless, if this devices primary purpose was to be rental box, then why even add a 250gb drive. You could of easily got away with a 50gb drive, hell why even allow purchasing at all. After-all you can just rent it again and save your 12 bucks. Why even create a VUDU XL, if this was purely just a rental box. Either way, it doesn't matter at this point, what is done is done, and I'll just have to wait.

I read them and I completely understood that HD content would come first and that it was clearly what more people were interested in. I think your question about the 250GB drive is backwards. If it was intended for a primary purchase mechanism, then why does it only have a 250GB drive. The drive size clearly indicates that it is for primary rental and occasional purchase.

I am using 4 Terastation servers to store my DVD collection and I am completely aware of why no amount of external storage will ever be sufficient for the hard core purchaser. The only thing that will work in that scenario is to treat the internal HDD as a cache and when you purchase a movie you own the rights to it. If it gets pushed out of the cache and you want to watch it again, then it should download automatically. This is kind of what you can do with the Tivo and Amazon Unbox functionality. I think that is a good thing and I may purchase more movies when they have that but I will never purchase an external drive to hook up to the box. Until then, I will primarily rent and occasionally purchase which is obviously the way most others see things.
